Firewire would deliver compressed video to the TV, and then the TV would have to decode it itself. So your picture quality, for example from scaling/deinterlacing, becomes totally dependent on the hardware in the TV rather than in the player. (And also support for types of compressed video... if your TV doesn't have an MPEG4 decoder, you can't play MPEG4 over firewire even if you get a player than can decode it, etc). Notice it's a lot more expensive to upgrade a big TV to new technology standards, than it is to upgrade a DVD player or similar device.

Not just the MPEG decoder either. If a substandard deinterlacing engine is installed, or the scaler employed rots, you either have to upgrade the display or the whole decoding engine.

I've said it on several occasions (including above), Firewire (as currently implemented) is a great tool for moving data around source level devices.

One of the biggest proponents of Firewire to the display also make MPEG decoders that exhibit chroma bug.
