Can somebody explain the benefits of using a capable receiver such as a Sony STR-DA4ES as a pre/pro then running to a dedicated amp (like an Outlaw).

I am slowly saving up to buy a STR-DA2ES and I think it will be the coolest piece of audio equipment I will ever have. I just can't fathom using a 4ES as a pre/pro only.

Am I going to be missing something by running a "conventional" setup?

Thanks, you guys are my heroes!

The one main advantage I think would be if you're spending a whole lotta money, you can buy the receiver and amp separately. And if you get the receiver first, then you can use it immediately. This makes it a very nice way to start out. Of course, if you're buying everything at once, then this isn't an issue.

Plus I've heard of people using the receiver as the amp for the rears, while the separate amp powers the fronts.

This link talks about stepping into separates a bit.

But for me, the first reason would be good enough. Nothing bothers me more in HT then having a piece of equipment that I can't use.
