Why don't they actually start releasing more movies, instead of this constant recycling? What is worse is that it is a recycle combined with an even dumber idea: flipper discs.

At least they aren't adding any features besides the flipside in this recycle. Worse would have been a true double-dip like Casino Royale was.

I kind-of, sort-of understand folks' distaste for the Blu-ray/DVD dual-format discs. But how on Earth can it be worse to release the films with more special features? That doesn't even make sense.

I guess after the successes of DualDisc and HD-DVD combos elevating their respective formats, I can understand why Universal would want to pursue this.

Seriously, putting aside the flawed premise for a moment: is this app'd by the Blu-ray Disc Association? What's the position of the hardware manufacturers?

Dual-sided DVDs seem to be really unpopular these days, and I've never even seen a dual-sided Blu-ray disc. So I'm curious: are there any dual-sided Blu-ray discs? Is a dual-sided disc even permitted by the Blu-ray specifications?

They *might* be wisely using this rerelease/recycle to test the market (and test the process as well).

My impression is that Universal is one studio that believes in testing the market w/ this kind of stuff. They certainly did that w/ DVD in the past, eg. separate releases for DD vs DTS, widescreen vs fullscreen, etc.

Yeah, would be nice if they actually put more of their efforts into releasing quality product, instead of coming up w/ this kind of "innovation". But they're doing this for business reasons -- they're in this to make $$$ afterall -- and I'm sure they think this has a reasonably good chance to help convert the masses to BD. I can't really fault them for wanting more market penetration even though I don't like this particular idea nor feel it'll work all that well in actual practice...

Have any of you guys looked at any of the DVDs that Universal has been turning out in the last while? Re manufacturing and content quality? I sure wouldn't want any of that stuff permanently glued to a perfectly fine BD. [And I'm only mentioning Uni because they're the thread studio. There are worse...some people here may not have looked at many recent release DVDs. Lucky you.]

If special features were my number one criteria for buying a movie then I would probably agree with you; however, since they are not, I can consider it worse when a film is constantly recycled regardless of the number of new features. I look at it as taking up valuable resources and money that could be better used to restore and/or properly transfer more films to Blu-ray. This format is only a few years old and we are being inundated with constant rehashes and third rate films, some of which I have never heard of. Where are the bigger catalog releases like "Apocalypse Now", "Das boot" or, in the case of Universal, "Back to The Future"? How about more classic films from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and so on before retreading a film series that was released only in the last couple of years? These studios should at least provide a deeper catalog on BD, before weighing down the shelves with retread after retread.

Please... don't sink down to the level of "flipper" discs. Some of the junk they are throwing on as extras doesn't warrant going to a flipper disc. The only way I could appreciate a flipper is if one side was Blu-ray and the other side was DVD. Now we get three discs, make the one flippable with the specs I mentioned and put the digital copy available via download. Back to one disc and drop the price.
