What under rated/cult movie à la Donnie Darko or Fight Club would you recommend? Every time I go to the video store, all I see are by-the-numbers Hollywood features that don't appeal to me all that much.

Thank you!

I don't know many who have seen these films that didn't like them but they don't seem as popular as other big ticket movies. They are on my everyone must see list.

Thank you all very much. I've seen some of them (Requiem for a Dream should be required viewing!) but I'll have to check out most of them.

Again, thanks!

this was the first movie i thought of after i read the title. so i guess i will have to say...barton fink. i have no idea how this one slipped under the radar (or whatever that stupid saying is) but it is simply brilliant. imo, it is the best movie i have seen that was made in the past 25 years.

I wouldn't consider all of these films 'cult' films, some are just lesser known that have received good critical reaction, but some definitely are cultish...

Eve's Bayou (1995)
Angels and Insects (1996)
Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai (1997)
Vanishing Point (1971)
Dead Man (1995)
The City of Lost Children (1995)
The Sweet Hereafter (1997)
A Boy and His Dog (1975)
In Cold Blood (1967)
Six-String Samurai (1998)
Blind Fury (1989) - one of my favorite Rutger Hauer films. Definitely a guilty pleasure.
The Hidden (1987)
Dune (1984)
Cronos (1993)

Definitely agree with...

The Limey
Kill Me Again
Spider
May

Who'll Stop The Rain (thriller, unrequited love, drama)
Blue Car (coming of age/drama)
Out Of Sight (crime, romantic comedy/drama)
Shoot To Kill (adventure,thriller)
Tucker: The Man & His Dream (drama, david vs goliath, the creative spirit)
Black Robe (civilization vs indiginous people, native american, faith and spirituality)

Almost Famous was anything but underrated. If anything, it was a critical darling when it was out in theaters. It was #1 on Ebert's top 10 of the year. Maybe it isn't well known among the majority but it is definitely a recognized film.
