Martin said that Flixter is an integral part of Time Warner's goal to help consumers manage their collection of digital movies better, along with industry consortium Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem's UltraViolet-branded system.

    Uh-huh.

And it don't snow in Minneapolis in the winter time.

My only experience with Flixster is through the facebook app, and it sucks.

Don't know that much about it. Just Warner titles? I can't see uploading 4-8 Gigs of data on every movie, that would take forever. Why not just have a code of proof of purchace? Unless Time Warner Cable want's to charge you extra for exceeding your bandwith limit. Must be an attempt to keep us buying DVD's. It's funny that unless the DVD has a digital copy we can't, by copywrite law, move a copy to another device, but with UltraViolet it's OK.

Actually, no. With Ultraviolet, several studios (Sony, Warner, Paramount, and several others) have signed on to say: WE will provide you a custom "ripping" type tool (due at some point) to allow you to archive off your media on your own... and then you can store it.

BUT, the fact that they've agreed to make these kind of changes pretty much open the door for anyone to archive on their own, because the fight over people doing it is pretty well over - as long as you legally own the original source. We'll discuss it in the HTPC area.. it's a changing world.

If you rip your own, the studios aren't coming after you any more. They've given up that ghost. Instead, they are going to give you every option to do whatever you want with media you BUY. BUT, at the same time, they have stepped up demands on illegal downloads and they will fight like hell against those.

The new calling card is going to be: we let you do whatever to get stuff you buy on iPhone/iPod/Android/your laptops/your PCs... but you have to BUY first.. if you never bought, and we give you every option out there, then we feel justified in throwing the book at you.

I think the movie industry has realized that it's too hard to shut it all down if public sentiment is against them; but if they can be seen as the good guys, offering every possibility out there and people won't do it legitimately, then that's a case they think they can win the PR war on.

The devils in the details. If you are right this could be great. If you HAVE to use approved ripping tools or other BS limitations nothing will change.
