I am looking to find a pair of Ultraphaze speakers as well as to understand the story behind them. I understand that there were made for about 3-4 years (76-79) in Denver. Not the most audiophile speakers I ever owned, but solid for the low end. I thin there wre 3 models and the woofer size was the means for quick differentiation. they had an 8 inch as well as a 19 and 12. If anyone can help me with knowledge of the drivers, crossovers and cabinetry dimensions as well as helping me find a set, I would be most appreciative.

    Best wishes

    J

Hello, all! ULTRAPHASE speakers yes i am the expert! Well at least i have a pair of 2001 and a pair of 5001!I bought these many years ago from a local shop. They were made in Englewood CO.The 2001 is a 2-way system 50lbs

and the 5001,s are a 3-way that are 85lbs big! There claim was Phase allined

voice coils gave a smoother, more detailed reproduction.Don MCdonald was

C.O of the company and i think had a spat with the IRS. I down-sized to

Pardiam stuff and have the ULTRAPHASE just setting! BUY THEM!

I was an early buyer of Ultraphase as well as being a student of their business model: approach, success and eventual failure which was more than just the IRS suit as it was the final coffin nail. They had some idea how to successfully market and build the sales channel, but insufficient focus and capital.
The 2way and the 8 inch model go cheap, but they were not that expensive to begin. The 3way model sells for 150-175 if mint which is pretty high given it was the most expensive pair and sold for under 500 then...normal depreciation for an old speaker that was not a true collectible like the Epicure is 50% in 5-7 years at best. After 10-15 less than 25% and these need to be in good shape with original drivers or the manf. suggested replacements. some sellers ask 175 to 500 for them as seen on ebay and audiogon, but they do not sell as shown since 1999. 100-150 is the range for the big boys and 100 for the 8 inch on a good day. the 2 way brings 50-60 when it sells and it rarely shows up, let alone sells. Just garage sale fodder.
Yes, Ultraphase produced some high quality sound for the money in their day, but .these have been surpassed many times over with advancements in technology and a declining price curve. Most Ultraphase speakers that survive have had their woofers replaced with lesser technology and the particle board cabinets, although heavy, really are not that good for sound quality especially over time given the natural break down of materials and the glues. A 200-300 pair of good bookshelves will outperform as a A/B comparison shows. Oh well, that's progress.

Found a pair of the Ultraphase. The situation with the seller imhotep999666 is one of, well you decide. Interesting situation? Desires market data. Gets the market data and he does not return emails as well as blocks the provider from bidding. Unlike others who have had these for sale and been very cooperative, these behaviors are interesting and not necessarily the norm for highly reputable sellers who provide responsive, high quality customer service which we all deserve.
