Well, as a former AV-8B mechanic, I can address Ruben's original concern. The vibrations of any jet engine are very minimal and would not prevent you from standing on it while they were running. However, there are several scenes where people are way too close to the intake. They would become instant FOD that near a real engine that wasn't at idle.

The best part of "True Lies" is Bill Paxton!

(Terrified) "Hey, it's you....you still interested in that 'Vette?"

"...when I turn around, you're gonna shoot me!!!"

This has to be the quintesential guilty pleasure movie. That said, how could you ever pick on this movie for elements that are not believable. That is like picking on a Road Runner Wil-e-Cyote movie because they don't obey the laws of physics when they run out of road and are suspended in space until they realize that they are about to fall and can pull out a plackard with a witty remark about their fate.
I watch this a couple of times a year and a few weeks ago ran it again. Except now, the part that is the most cartoonish the most unbelievable, (the terrorists use of the nuclear weapons) is the most plausible part of the whole script.
Arnold has to be the only actor that is so bad that you finally have to give up and accept him for what he is. He gets so bad that you have to laugh at the absurdity of what he is doing.
The other Arnold, Tom, is just as bad and maybe that is why this film succeeds.
Let's add Jamie Lee Curtis who shows enough of her fine body here to give visual verification that the quality of her body and acting ability are in inverse proportion.
Now I understand why the Three Stooges were so successful.
Now, if I were Arnold, the big one, I would want to thump on Bill Paxton, and Art Malik for stealing this movie.
Bill found his true niche as a comedy actor. I can't see him in a drama role after this. In everything he has done after this he is still Simon. With a small d..k.
Art Malik was just over the top enough to have fun with his role as the fanatical terrorist.
As for someone who had fun with his role, it was as if Charleston Heston was conducting an acting class when he had Arnold, and Arnold, and Grant (fast Faisel) Heslou at the debrifing back at agency headquarters. Heston (Spencer Trilby) to Faisel "What makes you think because I grant Harry some leeway, that it in any way extends to you?" Maybe because Cameron granted dispensation to all of these actors.
Another thing that stretched believabilty is that Cameron got Jamie Lee to strip down and was not able to get Tia Carera. Could there have not been one gratuititous bikini scene from her?
Last bit of incredulity. True Lies 2 for 2002.

The best part of True Lies is the awesome Jamie Lee Curtis dancing around in her panties.

Is the Harrier that fake CGI plane near the end of the movie? If so, then yes I laughed the minute I saw that cartoon.

I really like this movie. I'm probably one of the few people that enjoys watching Arnold Schwarzenegger's comedies(True Lies, Jingle All the Way, Kindergarten Cop, Twins). It's not so much that he's funny, but I find it funny to see some of the things he does in his movies.

The AV-8B Harrier was a life size mock-up. (In fact, it was suspended from the crane in the movie.) The bridge attack was actual footage of real aircraft. There may have been some scenes CGI enhanced, but most of it was live action.

I remember one of the owners of the place where I used to rent LaserDiscs telling me that he was in Key West when they did the Harrier bombings.

If it was CGI, it is the best I have ever seen because it sure as heck did look like it.

The Harriers were 100% real. I have read a interview with James Cameron where he talked about about how hard the harriers were to get and how expensive they were to rent from the U.S air force.
