George,

I forget where I read/heard of this originally but I did check IMDB (I know its never 100% accurate) on 2001 and it does list it as a joint UK/US venture.

I agree that we should henceforth restrict the tourney to films that are foreign language films. I'm as guilty as everyone else in choosing a few foreign made films in English.

As far as what constitutes a 'fun' film... That's what the tourney is for, right? To weed out what isn't 'fun'.

:D

Yeah, those three really suck.
No, but they're all (along with 2001, Strangelove, Kwai, etc) so popular that I fear our final eight would be all English language films in a "foreign films" tournament. And that would be exceedingly silly.

Sticking with foreign language films is fine with me - makes it more of a challenge...

Chris, Brook and Jim—I think that I had brainlock on Bride of Frankenstein. I got to thinking about the opening as was considering noms in another thread. What with the Mary Shelly, Percey Shelly and Lord Byron, I got into a Brit frame of reference and was still laughing to myself so much, I could not think (not for the first time).

I figured that Bride of Frankenstein was a mistake. I just didn't know if you knew something I didn't about it.

I don't mind English language film as long as it is very restrictive on them. Kubrick's and the Bond films were UK/US co-productions from the start and Lean's films appear on the AFI lists so they would be out.

Second
Alphaville
Stolen Kisses

Third
Shall We Dance
Spirited Away
Suspiria

OK,

Let's redo this as FUN Foreign Language Films only.

I'll be back later after I sort through the films.

I agree. :)

I vote foreign language only.

Yeah, those three really suck.
I don't think anyone is suggesting that those films suck.

But including them makes this tourney pretty much like many that we've already had.

Um, what happened to the Argento films? They were most definitely filmed outside the US. Also, as they were filmed in multiple languages, then dubbed for their respective release, I'd say they qualify for this tourney...

Contraband is an English language film.
Not if he means Lucio Fulci's CONTRABAND (aka THE SMUGGLER). :)

I nominate:

MAN BITES DOG
THE VANISHING
OPEN YOUR EYES
AUDITION
STAGEFRIGHT
UZUMAKI
KAIRO
SOLARIS
A LIZARD IN A WOMAN'S SKIN
WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE?
NEW YORK RIPPER

I agree that Argento's films should be included, and with that said, I second:

CEMETERY MAN
CRONOS
BATTLE ROYALE
PHENOMENA
TENEBRE
LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE

Second: Open Your Eyes

I love Solaris, but I most definitely don't think it falls into the category of "fun foreign film"...:D

Well I'd love to include the Argento films, but as they are Multilingual (w English Dubs & partial English dialog) they don't qualify in a 100% Foreign Language film Tournament.

The way we have it now is if you don't need to read subtitles then the film doesn't belong.

I'll be more than happy to put it up to a vote (just remember this would then qualify the Leone Westerns & may open this up to other English language films).

Go ahead and debate & decide among yourselves what types of films you want to qualify as I'm quickly becoming bored with having to readjust the rules every day. :frowning:

This tournament is on hold until I get a decision.

Never seen the Fulci film. I was of course, nominating the Powell film. I nominated it before the change to foreign language films only.

I'll third Open Your Eyes

I'll second The Vanishing

I don't mind the inclusion of foreign films that have some English dialogue in them. :)
