1. Superman Returns
Superman: The Movie is my favorite movie of all time. If this new one works even a quarter as good, it'll probably be my favorite film of 2006. Then again, Batman Begins is a tough act to follow...
2. The Fountain
This looks surreal and epic and poetic in a way I haven't seen since maybe 2001: A Space Odyssey. Should be a unique experience.
3. V for Vendetta
I dug the trailers, and I dug the style. I've heard very mixed things but for the time being I'm optimistic. Damn that's a cool Guy Fawkes mask.
4. X3
The trailer made the movie look even cooler than the two Singer movies. Ratner is accused of being pedestrian, but I thought his Family Man was a quiet little gem.
5. Clerks II
I'm a huge Kevin Smith fan, and I've been tracking the production through the web diaries. Looks like a new direction and I'm pumped.
6. Rocky Balboa
I'd love to see the old guy still have it in him. The whole approach to this film seems very different. Things like this just don't happen, and it's sure to be interesting no matter how good it ends up being.
7. The DaVinci Code
I read Angels & Demons and heard good things about this one. Ron Howard can be hit and miss but the trailer looked pretty good and the story is interesting.

Unusually for me, I can't believe how many 2006 films I'm sincerely looking forward to, much less how many '06 flickers seem (at least today) considerably intriguing.
Many of my favorite directors have something (at least potentially) scheduled for release.

I'm always happy when Scorsese has one in the works - loved the original and like this cast. The fabulously talented Mexican trio of Cuaron, Inarritu and del Toro each has a film coming out, plus Almodovar, Linklater, Aronfsky, Lynch, Winterbottom, Spike Lee, Gondry, Jonze(maybe), Tywker, Anderson (maybe) and Soderbergh. They won't all meet expectations but what a year of anticipation! Actual films for adults...wow. I doubt Peter Greenaway's Rembrandt film Nightwatch will make it to these shores in 2006 but that would truly be an embarrassment of riches.

BTW, I know some of these are 2004-2005 releases overseas - but they are 2006 releases here in Amerikay. The Pledge sounds intriguing, being a Nick Cave penned Aussie western starring Guy Pierce, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, John Hurt and David Wenham. I missed the Kiwi thriller In MY Father's Den on the festival circuit so I was happy to see it get US distribution.

I'm eagerly awaiting these 2005 limited release films to finally make it to my city in '06:

Flushed Away - cuz it's Aardman (Wallace & Gromit, Creature Cmforst et al) and in spite of Dreamworks
