Bryan:

Where did you get the 9/1 release date for the Star Wars Trilogy? I thought 11/4 was the strongly rumored date so far.

Personally I'm skeptical of both dates. 9/1 is a Wednesday, and 11/4 is a Thursday, but releasing the trilogy in November seems more likely than September.

I hope there isn't another thread like this.

So what films (especially older ones) do you think we'll see in 2004?

I think we'll start to see more and more old classics because I think the studios are trying to broaden the appeal of DVDs. One way to do that is to releases movies that can be shown full screen. The crowd that can't stand the "black bars" will be happy because their generally an older crowd that likes the older films. While us OAR types will also be happy.

I believe we'll see many more films from big name actors like Stewart, Cagney, Bogart and the like.

For instance:

White Heat
The Roaring Twenties
Northwest Passage
Mutiny on the Bounty (1962)
Passage to Marseilles
Kiss of Death
Call Northside 777
No Highway in the Sky
Easter Parade

I'd really be surprised if we didn't see most of these and others like them this year. Some may take longer then others if they're released in a special edition. I really expect '04 to be the new "year of the DVD".

Here's some obscure ones for you, I hope the studios have not forgotten:

Two essential films starring David Bowie, which have oddly not yet been released on DVD:
The Hunger
Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawernce

Some obscure but terrific foreign films:
Sundays and Cybele (Serge Bourguignon, 1962)
Possible Worlds (Robert Lepage, 2000)

Some popular films that are shamefully still not on DVD:
Raise the Red Lantern
Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet
The Double Life of Veronique
Delicatessan

Glad to see La Dolce Vita and Persona will come out next month!
