Michael, I've been waiting years for The Crying Game to be remastered. The video transfer on that disc was so bad I gave it away to a friend even though I'm a big fan of the film. Who owns the rights to this movie these days?
Hey guys, most of what you are complaining about are nowhere near as bad as what happened to that great film "The Seven Percent Solution". This was Universal's very first DVD and has a terrible transfer that's pan and scan to boot. This wonderful film deserves better treatment than this.
Ric: DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID is already in widescreen, although perhaps not anamorphic.
Joseph: FORBIDDEN PLANET is rumored to be on the way as a 2-disc special edition from Warner Bros.
Dennis: I agree - THE SEVEN PERCENT SOLUTION needs a great new widescreen transfer.
Many of you listed THE THING (1982). It may not be anamorphic, but it looks (and sounds) pretty stunning to me!
I would add: JEAN DE FLORETTE; MANON DE SOURCE; EXODUS; THE LAST EMPEROR; PARENTHOOD; WITCHES OF EASTWICK; LAND BEFORE TIME (OAR); SECRET OF NIMH (OAR); JOURNEY OF NATTY GANN (OAR); WHITE FANG (OAR); THE GREAT ESCAPE (rumored); oh, God, so many more...
I'd buy the following if the problems listed were fixed and as far as I'm aware they are not scheduled for the near future:
Wild Bunch (non-anamorphic flipper) The Getaway (dire anamorphic picture, coated in debris) Nixon Extended version (non-anamorphic) Nightmare Before Christmas (non-anamorphic) Batman 1,2,3 (early dvd's, picture and sound fairly naff) Thief (non anamorphic, poor sound - esp given released in quad format) Dirty Dozen (non anamorphic, poor sound) Sting (Pan and scan :-( ) Excalibur (Misframed and should look much better) The Thing (great transfer but non-anamorphic) Psycho (great transfer but non-anamorphic) Vertigo (great transfer but non-anamorphic) Dune (non-anamorphic, no supplements) Star Wars Episode I (should look almost as good as ep2, but doesnt....) Wages of Fear (Early criterion dvd, limited digital clean-up, need's more!) Fistfull of Dollars Trilogy (has just been "restored" on film with 5.1 sound, would make 3 great dvds) Ben Hur (misframed and from 35mm, not 65mm :-( ) Grosse Point Blank (non-anamorphic) To Catch a Thief (not from original Vista-vision 8 perf elements, hence less than amazing visual quality) Maltese Falcon (need's a new transfer from restored elements and digital clean-up) Jurassic Park & Lost World (Both pictures look nowhere near as sharp and detailed as they should, a two disc re-issue of each due to the supplements on the films may help the compression problems apparant)
I have got all the above dvd's and have watched them on an isf calibrated projection system, so can safely say to my eye's all the above faults are genuine!
