It's that time of year again...

This is the place to post your top ten films of 2009.

I will compile a periodic master list of HTF's top ten of 2009 and post the results to this thread through the first three or four months of the year.

It is strongly suggested you have seen at least 30 films from 2009 before posting a list. films seen from this year are typically documented in the Track the films you watch thread or the 2009 films list thread

please order your list and include ten films. I will not include a list with less than ten films.

if your list is not ordered, all ten films will be awarded an equal point value while tabulating the master list.

Please limit yourself to just one tie if you absolutely must include one.

Most of HTF, american and international members, use academy qualification (one week theatrical run in LA or NYC) to determine if a film is 2009 or not, though you are free to use another qualification (first global release, which IMDB uses, is most common second choice)

If you update your list please make a post stating your list has changed, otherwise I won't change it in my excel sheet.

when compiling the master list, I'll award points based on ranking: for example, a number one film will receive 10 points, and a number 10 film will receive one point

thanks! and have fun.

Hmm... this year, I ended up with giving 20 films a grade of B, 3 films a grade of B+, and one film a grade of A-. At this time, I'm not going to list any film with a B- grade or lower.

So, the film I gave an A- was also the one I enjoyed the most this year:

1. Avatar - rewards multiple viewings, go see it in IMAX-3D!

These got a grade of B+ from me:

2. Star Trek - if only it had a better antagonist
3. Up! - solid film, but not crazy about the mid-section
4. The Hurt Locker - super-tense

Of all the films I gave a grade of B to this year, I'd most likely re-watch these 6 films:

5. The Fantastic Mr. Fox - Wes Anderson finally finds his calling.
6. Where the Wild Ones Are - Spike Jonze really nails this one.
7. Black Dynamite - so much fun poking more fun with the genre.
8. The Hangover - so much fun throughout its running time.
9. Zombieland - best cameo this year, hilarious in execution.
10. (500) Days of Summer - bittersweet without being sappish

The rest of the films with a grade of B:

Taken
I Love You Man
The Road*
Sunshine Cleaning
Adventureland
State of Play
District 9
Whip It
Precious
An Education*
The Blind Side
Brothers
Invictus

* added "The Road" and "An Education", still have a small handful of films from 2009 that might make my list or honor mentionables.

I'm not posting a list yet but I'm just saying that in the old days everyone's posts were filled with movie posters etc. and it was really pleasing to the eye. What happened to THOSE days? Sheesh. By the way, this is my first post back in years. I used to be a regular back in the early part of the decade. Good to be back.

I've seen almost 75 movies from this year (though I'm sure there's a couple more that will get wider releases once the Oscar nominations get announced) but, as of now, my list is pretty much set.

I hate ranking movies so I'll just list my top 10 favorite movies in alphabetical order:

Adventureland
Avatar
Away We Go
500 Days Of Summer
Funny People
Inglourious Basterds
Star Trek
Up
Up In The Air
Whip It

Runners up (alphabetically): The Hurt Locker, Precious, The Road, Sunshine Cleaning and Watchmen.

Future cult classics: Drag Me To Hell, Extract, Jennifer's Body and Observe And Report.

Though I imagine there will be another thread for predictions, I think Up In The Air will win the Oscar for Best Picture.

Very preliminary list as I've seen 50 2009 LA/NYC releases and I usually end up in the 100-120 range for any year. This list should change substantially after I see more 2009 releases. I hope so anyway as nothing I've seen so far really feels like a best movie of the year.

Top 10

1. Up
2. Inglourious Basterds
3. Away We Go
4. Watchmen
5. Ponyo
6. Tyson
7. The Band That Wouldn't Die
8. District 9
9. Sugar
10. I Love You, Man

Honorable Mention (All Movies I graded "B+")

Partly Cloudy (2009, Peter Sohn)
Star Trek (2009, J.J. Abrams)

O' Horten (2007, Bent Hamer)
Drag Me to Hell (2009, Sam Raimi)
The Girlfriend Experience (2009, Steven Soderbergh)
Thirst (2009, Chan-Wook Park
Avatar 3D (2009, James Cameron)

Up in the Air (2009, Jason Reitman)

5 Worst Movies of 2009
1. Paul Blart: Mall Cop (painful)
2. Friday the 13th (Jason doesn't take prisoners)
3. The Last House on the Left (misses everything that made the original special)
4. Planet 51
(For kids only, does nothing interesting with its concept)
5. Fragments
(I'm calling for a 5-year moratorium on multi-story indie flicks)
