1953 - French military calls on US President Eisenhower to help with Vietnam, seeing a "light at the end of the tunnel" Ike refuses (politely). French were defeated by May, 1954 (exact date on that one hard to pin down).

May 22, 1990 - Yemen unites from it's former divided self (north was a marxist state)

May 22, 1977 - Jimmy Carter lays out his vision of Human Rights in the world at Notre Dame university, Carter expoused his policy as "a policy based on constant decency in its values and on optimism in our historical vision." Carter's speech, coming shortly after the '76 election, was seen as the statement of his administrations policy.

May 22, 1966 - Bill Cosby becomes first African American to win an Emmy for his role in "I, Spy"

May 22, 1939 - Benito Mussilini and Adolf Hitler sign the "Pact of Steel" between Germany and Italy as Axis powers.

May 22, 1972 - Richard Nixon becomes first US President to visit Russia.

May 22, 1992 - Johny Carson says "goodbye" for the last time as the Tonight Show closes. Late night ratings never reached the same heights ever again.

May 22, 2006 = NASA issues first papers noting the apparent existence of water on Mars.

Today was kind of a quiet day in history, actually.. not finding a ton in my books ;( Here's some oddball ones though:

May 23, 1903 - Soda fountain explosion in Chicago kills two as over-pressurized container ruptures
May 23, 1966 - Schlitz Brewing, who had introduced the pop-top can for beer in March goes nationwide with production. But May 23 is special in that Coca-Cola company, along with a few others, invest in development of a "pop machine" which could handle cans.

May 27, 1647 - The witch trials in Salem claim their first (recorded) victim by burning to death.

May 27, 1941 - The bismark is sunk by the Royal British Army

May 27, 1703 - Peter the Great founds St. Petersburg

May 27, 1937 - The Golden Gate Bridge opens for use

May 27, 1927 - The last Model T ford, the first mass produced automobile, ends production. The Model T started as a luxury item at $850, but by 1915, thanks to the assembly line, the car reached it's low price of $344. More Model Ts were sold then any other car until the VW Bug.

May 27, 1972 - Nixon & Brezhnev sign the first SALT agreement, the first major agreement between the super powers in regards to development of Strategic Arms. This is the first time any limits on ABMs were set by either country in agreement.

May 27, 1971 - Before being outted by the French government, Sweden reveals it had been supporting the VietCong for more then 4 years, supplying around $600,000 in medical supplies, tents and food. Sweden contends that the aid is "humanitarian only" and no military aid was sent.

May 27, 1941 - FDR declares unlimited national emergency over situation in Europe and it's economic impact, and makes clear to Germany any attack on US interests will be harshly dealt with. FDR also tells his audience that only a direct attack would cause the US to become immediately involved, as the US is still recovering from WWI.

May 27, 1940 - the British evacuation of Dunkirk turns into a humanitarian disaster. 99 British soldiers were stripped, thrown into a pit, and shot. For almost 3 years, the story was not believed until the two witnesses to the event testified to it in Germany and others involved admitted.

May 27, 1996 Russian President Boris Yeltsin signs a truce with Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev, the Chechnya leader to cease fighting between the two. It was generally not very successful as minor incursions still occur.

May 29, 1953 Hillary and Tenzing reach Everest summit

May 29, 1848 Wisconsin becomes state

May 29, 1988 Reagan arrives in Moscow for Summit. This summit is famous for Reagan's addressing TAS (Russian Press) by saying the US had significant demands for Russian impovement of human rights, especially in handling of religion. Reagan speaks specifically of Russian Jewish oppression, which gets press. Summit ends with trade agreements and the INF Treaty. In a joint press conference they announce that while there are still great disagreements "a great thawing" is occuring in the relationship.

May 29, 1972 - After joint talks with the Russians, a combined message is release. The US issues a statement saying the South Vietnamese must be free to choose democracy and their future. The Russian statement demanded complete removal. However, the US case to Russia was successful, it's continual funding of the North Vietnamese was costly with very little gain. Russia took the point. While it believed complete victory was possible in 1968, the feeling of stalemate was also setting in within the Kremlin. After failed peace talks, Russia began to pressure Hannoi. Russia's first envoy in that cause was (rumored) to be sent June 1, 1972 for an agreement brokered by January 1973.

May 29, 1975 - Gerald Ford vetoes 5.3B "Jobs Creation" bill. Saying it was full of pork and unlikely to succeed, Ford's veto is viewed as a political death knell, even in his own party, as rising inflation and joblessness begin to set in.

May 31, 1990 - SEINFELD premieres on NBC. Far from a show about "nothing", typical themes include 1) where comedians get there ideas, 2) idiosyncratic behavior, 3) the development and production of the show itself, and 4) social situations for which no rules exist, or for which the rules are ambiguous.

May 31, 1943 - First broadcast of ARCHIE radio show, based on the popular comic book.

May 31, 1790 - George Washington signs The Copyright Act of 1790 into law.

May 31, 1991 - After an attempted comeback of the communists within Russia, Boris Yeltsin solidifies support and on this day declares the USSR "Over" and governs as Russia only, satellite states are basically released.
May 31, 1997 - US Government begins initial investigation into Microsoft Business Practices.
May 31, 1982 - US Ends DOJ investigation into IBM and releases IBM of monopoly concerns regarding home PCs. The release began IBM's R&D into their first full home product (PC Jr) which would be announced November 1, 1983, and released the next year.

May 31, 1982 - Choplifter released by Broderbund for the Apple II. The game becomes one of the first to sell 500,000 copies.

May 31, 1985 - MECC Releases "The Oregon Trail" to the Apple II. Soon after, little timmy died of Dysentery.
