I'm still learning the characteristics of the 580 with the 7D. Generally Canon ETTL does seem to lean towards overexposure, so a -1/3 or -2/3 would probably be fine in average situations.


I found this info (and his book in general) pretty helpful just to get a foundation of how ETTL works. http://neilvn.com/tangents/2010/04/18/canon-ettl-flash-average-vs-evaluative/ Interestingly, it's not too different from how the camera's built in meter gets fooled by certain lighting scenarios.

I will try to experiment with doing with less flash exposure compensation, and see if that evens out the exposure, but you're probably right about the tendency to overexpose shots when using the flash. At least the 580EX is pretty flexible, just need more time and experience to grok it.
