I did the same. Its not a mistake. We still have a nice DVD player. I have all but stopped buying discs. I only have 3 pre-order BDs, Blade Runner, Deliverance, and 2001. Everything else is now on hold for me, just renting for now. I only have 6 BD discs in my 3 months.

Been buying lots of DVDs however!

Thing is, I already had a nice DVD player in the A1.
In some ways, nicer, since the only glitches I've had with the Sony have been playing sd dvds.

I wanted Casino Royale badly, and I have enjoyed the 1/2 dozen other Bds I've bought- and I'm looking forward to the AB horror titles and CEt3K- but I am hesitent to compile too large a collection on the format now.

If it eventually does go kaput, the good news is that there will be 1,000,000+ owners of the hardware who haven't bought many movies- so the software might still have some novelty value for them.
At least, if it turned out to be a doomed format, the software wouldn't be totally worthless- there might *eventually* be a market for the out of print used discs, as these PS3 owners step up to bigger and better displays.

But this line of thinking is still a little premature. I'm one of the few people it seems that actually appreciates the format war.
I honestly don't want it to end anytime soon.

This is really disappointing--I would definitely have purchased M&C. Is there any news on From Hell, which I think was originally scheduled for Q1 of '07?

Time was when Fox was one of the best studios for DVD releases, to see them crap out like this on HD disc is really unacceptable.

I'm curious. How many BR titles has Fox actually released? And what percentage of the total number of released BR titles does that represent?

I think I read somewhere that Fox had released 34 titles, but I could be misremembering that.

Doug

Edit: I just counted the available titles on Fox's website. I could only find 24.

Fox has maybe the best back catalogue right now with big old classic movies that already have a great spanking new transfer ready for HD.

If they had released some of them I would have gotten my BR player long ago, as it is I feel better for not yet having bought one.

Studio support is about releasing titles, not announcing and then cancelling them - short of going format neutral or HD-DVD exclusive this is the most damage Fox could do to the BR camp.

I'd say if BD+ wasn't working the whole slate of titles will get nixed so I'd scratch that off unless what I just stated turns out to be the case.

It could be that they just shot from the hip in response to the Paramount news without firming up production slots.

It could be an issue with the Java content.

The BD50 lines very well could be maxed out for the season. There are quite a few lined up from Sony, Anchor Bay, Disney, Warner and Fox so this wouldn't surprise me. Warner in particular seems to be going nuts with releases so I'd imagine in light of the Paramount issue, they're bending over backwards to accommodate them. Though offhand I don't know how many BD50 title Warner has lined up.

The thing is we usually never know why titles get pulled (on both formats) aside from our own speculation. We never got a peep from Fox as to why they bailed out 6 months ago. I still don't know why Starship Troopers (BD), Cat People(HD), Saturday Night Fever(HD), etc, etc got yanked.

For some reason I assumed that the reason for the general lack of releases this summer was that they were using that time to churn out BD's to stockpile for Q3/4. Doesn't look like the case though.

So all in all for me I have yet to pre-order any of the Fox titles and it looks like there's no reason to at this point until a title is confirmed as shipping out to people.

Here's the guy in charge of Fox PR. Can we get Ron to set up an HTF chat? ;)

And where is the official announcement? I don't work myself up until I hear it is a fact, and then I try to be neutral and give Fox the credit and assume there was a reason because any studio that has to cancel or delay a title is losing money. The internet is full of rumuors. If indeed this is true, I believe there was some kind of problem with the transfer and it will probably be a delay, or maybe they decided on better interactivity. I'd rather wait for something better than buy a 40.00 disc that's substandard to what they might be eventually releasing.

Sure it's no picnic when a title is delayed, but don't you think Fox wants to release it and earn the extra income? Maybe there's a problem that needs to be worked out and they don't want US disappointed, ever think of that? This is a new format, with new interactivity and new everything. I don't expect everything to happen as scheduled during this period.

Jim K: I agree with you, it seems some people can't wait, and actually get a high to put the axe in a studio that, so far in my opinion, has so-far put out some quality releases.

This really pisses me off. If we can still get Fantastic Four 2 on Oct.2 ,which is a pretty high profile release, then what is the hold up with catalog titles? I don't want to hear any of this disc security BS anymore from them as a reason. Fox,....to hell with you.

Fox/MGM has become a complete joke. I'll gladly be spending my BD money on Warner, Sony, Disney, Starz and Lionsgate releases as they actually, you know, release titles on BD.

Skip the Fox titles then, not me thanks, I'll not get so worked up. Some of my faves are on Fox. As I said before, a little patience is requried with a brand new format, and this format is the most technical of all preceeding it.

I too was looking forward to the Fox BD releases in Q4, particularly Die Hard 1 & 2. If they put them in some hugely expensive box without the option of buying them seperately, then it's a definite no-sale.

Trying to look on the bright side though, the money saved not buying those will allow purchase of some of the excellent BD discs being released by other studios: Kubrick collection, Sopranos 6 Part 2, Blade Runner, etc...

(All of which will be available on HD-DVD too - I know, I know......)

It's reasonable to think that Blu-Ray is having real problems producing discs for a number of potential reasons, and it's not good for them, considering the format war they're in.

This is pretty essential question. While I can believe this news and all that, I like to hear some "official" word on this one.. Blu-ray-bashing by AVS is not my cup of tea, so I take anything from the site with the grain of salt.

I have already several Fox-titles on pre-order, but not these.. They´ll still got my money, no problem.

Brett, You beat me by four minutes.:)

The Digital Bits: Master & Commander delay

"During QC, Fox discovered an authoring problem that could cause problems on a small number of Blu-ray players, so they decided to correct it."

Wonder if "Amityville Horror" has the same problem?:frowning:

I respect Fox for worrying that those few players would not play the movie, and doing it over. Couldn't be a cheap move for them.

.....and so is Fox still the awful disgusting company that was talked about previously in the thread? lol.
