So, just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, two idiots lit up cigarettes at Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back last night.
Cigarettes. In the theatre.
They kept spraying perfume up around them, like it'd make the smell go away.
Worst part: after our complaint, it took more than ten minutes for an usher to finally come to the theatre, and then he stood around in the doorway not doing anything until I got out of my seat and approached him and asked him what he was waiting for, at which point he reluctantly went to talk to the idiots.
I had no popcorn to throw this time, though I was sorely tempted to go empty my Coke on 'em and then claim that I thought they had caught fire and was trying to save their lives.
I'm starting to think I should just stay home.
This was at AMC Winston Churchill in Mississauga, where they appear to have tons of ushers, but none of them ever seem to patrol the theatres themselves.

As the obviously considerate gentleman said above, on-call doctors shouldn't be in movies. Therefore, jammers are an excellent idea. I would also think that anyone on call couldn't relax at a theater if they're worrying that they'll get called in at any second.
The problem with cell phones isn't doctors, it's usually the teenagers who just have to know the instance it happens if 'Bobby' said he 'liked' her or not.

They were so obviously drunk or high, you have to wonder how they got into the theatre in the first place.
I think I'm going to write some letters to Famous Players and AMC. I'd write to Cineplex Odeon, too, but they closed the York and Canada Square, so there's really no point. Where are the ushers hanging out, and what the heck is the point of having them if they can't or won't put a stop to this nonsense?

Spraying perfume to mask Cigarette smoke. Great! Two obnoxious odors for the price of one! That's like flatulating to divert attention from your body odor.

Sorry if I seem a bit dim, but what's the problem with smoking in the movie theater? Is it just that you have a problem with smoking in general (in which case I'd have to disagree with your complaint) or is there some specific reason for not smoking in a movie theater, as opposed to somewhere else?

If that somewhere else means a place I don't frequent (like your own home), then you can smoke to your "hearts" delight. But, if you are in a public place, smokers should respect the fact that cigarette smoke is dangerous and those of us who don't smoke don't need to inhale it. Just because you (smokers in general) smoke and don't care about the side effects, it doesn't give you any right to endanger my health. And that is beside the awful stink that smoking creates. Horrid. If you can't move ten feet or wait two hours before needing a cigarette, that is your problem. Stay home. But when you get that cigarette dropped in your drink or mashed out in your food because you are inconsiderate, don't act like your shocked it happened.

I'm from Los Angeles and for the most part, whenever I went to the Theater, things were relitivly quiet and things were not a problem.
Now I'm in the Air Force and live in Missouri, where not almost everyone has ties with the movie industry like people do in L.A.. The first time I went to the only local movie theater here it was all I could do not to walk out without finishing the movie and demanding my Monie back. I tried again a month or so later with the same result. I won't even go to any movie theater in this area. Not for any reason, I'd go crazy.
I don't see why people need to be so rude. It's things like this that really piss me off.
Now, I just wait for it on DVD and enjoy it at home. If there was a local theater that actually did their job, I would gladly pay whatever I need to........Wil

In Canada, it is against the law to smoke in a movie theatre. Even if it were not, it is exceptionally inconsiderate in as small and enclosed a place as a movie theatre, not just because of the smell and the obstruction of the screen from the smoke, but also because of the health risks.

I usually just go to an afternoon matinee. No matter what movie I go see, there's hardly ever anyone there. I've tried going at night, but the kids are just too much to take.

I have noticed that since I have purchased my home theater setup, I have been going to movies less often. Big surprise. As my home viewing conditions have improved, the public movie viewing conditions have gone into the pisser. What I can't figure out is why theater chains haven't figured this out yet and taken steps to capitilize on it. Why not advertise that no person under 25 is allowed, ushers in every theater, rude people will be immediately ejected, etc? Seems like a heck of sales pitch to me.
Also, just thought I would mention, cell phone jammers do not affect pagers.

Perfect. Then even that argument against cellphone jamming goes out the window.
Granted, on the GSM system we have in Europe the cell phone can both send and receive text messages so actual pagers are on the way out AFAIK but even so.

I'm curious to know, from those who abhor the thought of signal jamming of wireless devices...do you get so worked up about tunnels, hospitals, parking garages, basements, and other places that signals can't reach due to material thickness? Is it some god-given right you have to that signal at all places at all times, and that the architects of such structures MUST comply with your wishes?
If you think it's reasonable for those structures to stand without wireless signals, would it then be perfectly suitable for a theatre to intentionally shield its walls to improve the quality of its business?
I would think so.
(No offense meant in asking.)

As was mentioned earlier, signals jammers would do more damage than good because hospitals need to have access to their on-call doctors. Solution: Ban all doctors from movie theaters. :)
As for enforcing strict rules against morons at the movies, remember one thing: MOST of the people at the movies are morons! Isn't that why we all watch our movies at home?

Yeah, but don't you guys in the good ol' USof A cheer and whoop during films?
I saw a pirate copy of The Phantom Menace and basically some guy had just taken his camcorder into the theatre and then stuck the recording on CD.
And during the opening sequence the whole audience were shouting and cheering and whooping etc, i could not believe it.
Another thing I remember is when Qui Gon and Obi Wan first appear everyone cheered and clapped, and when the bad guy appeared everyone boo'd - you get the idea.
I couldn't stand that, its not a pantomime after all.

Post someone inside the theater. When the first phone rings, immediately stop the movie. After bringing up the lights, the person who was on the phone should be asked to leave. After he(she)leaves, begin the movie.
As the example is made, more and more people will not want the embarassment of being watched by everyone in the theater as they are escorted out. Eventually, this kind of behavior would stop.
The problem is that there are no consequences!
