I found news of a new (well, I use the term loosely) nine film boxset Powell & Pressburger: The Collection which is being released by Granada Ventures, at www.powell-pressburger.org.

The box, released in this, Michael Powell's cententary year, will only be available from HMV both on-line and in store from August. If you're a fan, you should already have most of the titles (and be aware that Criterion are rumoured to be releasing both 49th Parallel and A Canterbury Tale soon, and that Sony still has their restored SE of A Matter of Life and Death to announce in R1) but you won't have They're a Weird Mob, which is making it's DVD debut in R2 (though it's out in R4). Price is £39.99.

Just watched this film last night. ;)

Too bad that unreleased Powell & Pressburger films remain that way.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the existing DVD of this sublime, timeless film have no extras? I own the excellent Criterion edition, but I'd glady buy for a new transfer; the Criterion transfer is very good, but is a bit scratchy in places.

A bargain set for new-comers to The Archers. Incidentally, why does this set not include the new - and controversial - Black Narcissus DVD?

Yup, still waiting on A Matter of Life and Death, Sony!

I can't wait for the Criterion editions of The 49th Parallel and A Canterbury Tale. The Tales of Hoffmann disc has been long-awaited by my DVD player.

I can heartily recommend the UK disc of Gone to Earth. Which has a gorgeous transfer and decent extras. Available HERE.

I Know Where I'm Going has recently undergone restoration by Granada, but AFAIK (my set is still in the mail) this is the older Carlton DVD sans extras.

It was originally intended to be included, but it was pulled and licensed out to Network at the eleventh hour.

...erm... Running time of "Colonel Blimp" is 163 minutes, not 103 as indicated above... one hopes...

Being PAL, the DVD run time is just about 157 minutes. Sadly, I have three copies of this - don't ask - soon to be joined by a fourth! And you would think, therefore, I would have spotted that typo... ;)

Just bumping this thread; the set is now an eye-popping £17.99 at HMV via the link in the first post and is no longer an 'HMV exclusive' as of July - it's up at £29.99 at Amazon UK on pre-order.

Four films from Powell & Pressburger have been released in France:

- Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
- The 49 th Parallel
- Black Narcissus
- Red Shoes

They seem to be splendid editions. The price is 24,99 euros in all retailers.

DVD Times has reviewed the new French editions of:

The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Black Narcissus
A Canterbury Tale

Check out the links to the Institut Lumiere website from those reviews; more P&P have been released over there. Those R2 French releases have also now been released in an 8-disc boxset - see here.

And there's another French box release, containing A Matter of Life and Death and the first DVD release of Oh...Rosalinda! - see here.

Plus, Play.com have artwork for the new UK P&P box here.
