Yeah, and I also had to play some weird games. Adam's Rib is a romantic comedy, and not a courtroom drama, but it's on both lists, and it helped me fill out courtroom dramas by putting it there, and freeing up a slot in romantic comedies.

The more I think about it, the stranger these categories are, ranging from broad (mystery) to narrow (courtroom drama), and having two categories (courtroom drama and gangsters) that are in some ways subgenres of mystery. And of course, whole major genres (e.g., musicals) are missing entirely. But, hey, I may comment on it, but it isn't something that really matters to me how they do it.

I have a question about Advise & Consent. I left it off, cause the list has it as 1949. I'm assuming that's a different film than the excellent 1962 one.

Whoa, good catch George. I can't imagine what movie it's referring to. But I figure the congressional hearing scene fits A&C '62 into the category so it would be my write-in anyway.

I'm bumping this thread back up for the following reason.

The AFI has issued a press release about the "10 Top 10" special. The press release is located here: CBS PressExpress - CBS Television Network - AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE BRINGS HOLLYWOOD'S BRIGHTEST STARS TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE "AFI's 10 TOP 10," WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17 ON THE CBS TELEVISION NETWORK

Needless to say, I'm excited, and I'm also trying to guess possible winners based on the commentators listed. So far, I think that, on the basis of Michael J. Fox's appearance, "Back To The Future" will be on the Sci-Fi list, while Gene Hackman's presence leads me to think that "Unforgiven" will be on the Westerns list.

So, any thoughts on what they've announced so far?

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

And there will be more commentators besides those listed.

Jane Fonda, so Klute, probably in the mystery, cat ballou wasn't nominated, so not for that, possibly Barefoot in the Park for Romantic Comedy. though she could very well be the one talking about the inevitable placement of 12 Angry men in the courtroom drama, or maybe Ox Bow Incident, Fort Apache or My Darling Clementine maybe made it on Westerns?

I would bet Jerry Maguire made the list in one of the categories it was nominated in (Cuba Gooding Jr is presenting and he hasn't done anything else that could possibly merit his inclusion)

Jennifer Love Hewitt has me perplexed as a presenter, perhaps just pimping Ghost Whisperer?

I'm guessing Kirk Douglas means Spartacus made the list under epic.

Sigourney Weaver probably means Alien, though maybe Working Girl made it on the rom com list.

Spielberg is probably talking about Lawrence of Arabia, other epics, westerns, fantasy and possibly anything else, the man is a walking explosion of enthusiasm for american cinema... oh and a few of his movies probably made the lists.

Sean Astin probably indicates both Rudy or Lord of the Rings, probably, possibly number one in both categories, though if Rudy is number one over Rocky I'll be stunned.

drawing a blank on jessica alba, james wood.

I will dance for joy if the Gabriel Byrne inclusion means that Miller's Crossing made the gangster's list! but it probably just means Usual suspects made the mystery list :frowning:

damn I just read down to this paragrah, and it's very enlightening, so probably no miller's crossing, byrne is hosting mystery.

my guess is Scorsese and Eastwood are hosting the last two categories. I guess Meg Ryan didn't want to host the rom com so they got Jessica Alba, but I guess it makes sense as a cross promotion for the Love Guru which will be releasing that week.

I went over the list of the fifty nominated Westerns and I don't recall "3:10 To Yuma", the original version, being listed. If I am correct, compared to some of the listed titles, there seems a problem with the nomination process or a list of fifty is too low.

i'm conflicted on some of my number ones, I was thinking on the big jumps in popularity/ranking made by Raging Bull, Vertigo and City Lights on last years 10th anniversary list, and so I'm thinking all three of those are threats to the number one choices I put down, I figure they've got to be at least number two if they're not number one. I also think I probably should have guessed Snow White as number one in animated but I think that's kind of boring, I'd love to see Beauty and the Beast take it. I suppose Wizard of Oz will be number one on the fantasy list but it wouldn't make my top ten so I'm keeping LoTR deservedly at my guess for number one.

My own personal favourites are so different in five of the categories. For instances I'd like to see Butch Cassidy win but I don't think it has a hope in hell. I hope it's one of the best ten. I would have also chosen Goodfellas or History of Violence over the Godfather but neither of those stand a chance. Maybe Goodfellas for the top ten but certainly not History of Violence. I think Cronenberg is just too weird, in the institute's eyes for any film of his to be considered. Annie Hall I personally disliked. I would rather have seen Bringing Up Baby (my favourite), Philadelphia Story or the Apartment win. I think both Philadelphia Story and the Apartment will be in the top ten but Bringing Up Baby, I don't think stands a chance. I'm torn about the Sci-fi category. I think 2001 will win and it probably deserves to win. I rated it 5/5 myself but films I've rated alot lower give me more enjoyment. It is possible that Star Wars will be number one because it was such a cultural phenomenon but one of the movies that inspired Lucas was 2001 so that's why I've chosen it.

I imagine goodfellas will be number two and Godfather Part Ii will be number three. Star Wars will probably be number two behind 2001 unless the two of them flip flop, which is possible.

I looked at the films nominated for fantasy again, I think the top ten from it will probably cause the most consternation. I can easily envision a list where Lord of the Rings and Wizard of Oz, and King Kongare the only three 'classic' fantasy films on the final ten, with the other seven being films like Big, Miracle on 34th Street, Field of Dreams, Harvey, It's a Wonderful Life (this or King Kong is a likely number 3 in this genre I think), and Groundhog Day. I love all those films, but I hope there is some diversity away from the 'safe' nominated films. I'd like to see some Harryhausen and Tim Burton make it onto the final list. And I"m really hoping Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Willy Wonka, and Mary Poppins and Princess Bride make it in, I figure Mary Poppins is probably a very safe bet to make it though I can hardly imagine a list as actually representative of the fantasy genre without it including Princess Bride (should also be on Romantic comedy, imo). I'll be curious to see if any of the superhero films make it in. The fantasy nominees seem to be the biggest mishmosh of different kinds of films than any of the other lists, you don't get as strong a sense of a cohesive genre from the nominees.

I agree with you, PatW, on The Apartment, I'd love to see it take number one, but I suppose it'll be in the top five, and that's pretty damn good.

my personal number one from the 50 nominated films in each genre:

Animated: Beauty and the Beast

Courtroom Drama: To Kill a Mockingbird

Epic: Lawrence of Arabia

Fantasy: The Princess Bride

Gangster: The Godfather

Mystery: The Thin Man (or Charade, but I've only seen it once)

Romantic Comedy: the Apartment

Sci-fi: A.I. Artificial Intelligence (or Eternal Sunshine)

Sports: Field of Dreams

Western: The Searchers (used to be man Who Shot Liberty Valence, but I think it doesn't hold up quite as well but that's ONLY because it's soundstage bound).

I'm glad to see that you love A.I. It is such a misunderstood movie and unjustly is the object of ridicule. I don't think it's Spielberg's best but it is a masterpiece. Field of Dreams is also my own personal favourite but I doubt if it has any chance. We shall see.

Can't say I love their genres. Action, horror, comedy, etc. But I'll play, from their lists.

Animation
THE INCREDIBLES

Fantasy (their choices are...pretty esoteric)
THE PRINCESS BRIDE (tough picking against my beloved FOTR, but...)

Gangster (I liked this list a LOT better)
HEAT (personal choice - THE GODFATHER would be more objective for me)

Sci-Fi (happy to see CONTACT......wtf THUNDERDOME over RW?!?)
BLADE RUNNER

Western (still pretty light on westerns)
THE SEARCHERS

Sports
FIELD OF DREAMS

Mystery (happy to see DEVIL IN A BLUE DRESS on this list)
VERTIGO

Romantic Comedy
SAY ANYTHING...

Courtroom Drama (tough to not put 12 ANGRY MEN or TO KILL..., but)
THE INSIDER

Epic
TITANIC (or a write-in for THE NEW WORLD)
But I wouldn't say that TITANIC is better than several movies on that list :)

I was happy to see that Michael Mann has 4 films on the list...I picked two of them, and considered another (ALI).
