I kept peeking and nobody was here.
I saw Homefront last weekend. I wasn't too enthused for it from the trailer, although I love Statham. I found it very predictable and formulaic. Mr. Smirky Franco did not make a very menacing bad guy, either.
The week before that, I saw Commitment, a Korean film about a teenager forced to become a spy. It was pretty good. I'm not familiar with the lead actor, who is apparently a singing idol in Korea. He was pretty good. I also saw Out of the Furnace which had good performances but was good, not great.
Will likely see American Hustle this weekend.
Hoping to sit down with some blu-rays before the year's end. Never seem to find the time because it's a huge task just keeping up with my TV shows. And I just keep adding new shows to my roster. I did drop "Hawaii 5-0" after all these seasons. Recently added "Almost Human" and will be adding "Rake" and "Chicago P.D." in January.

I saw Disney's Frozen last week. (Remember, you can't spell Frozen without Frezon! I never get tired of that.) Not impressed. People were saying it was the return to the Menken/Ashman Golden era, etc. While it had some nice moments, the songs were rather Glee-like and there is very little about it that is stuck in my memory. It is the best thing that Disney Animation has put out in years (don't get me wrong) but they have a ways still to go to achieve what they were doing in the 1990s.

Saving Mr. Banks was very disappointing. It's got structural problems in the script that could have been helped but not saved by editing. Nebraska was great if you like Payne and especially have knowledge of the non urban midwest.Wolf of Wall Street was amazing and classic Scorsese - if you liked Casino this is pretty much Casino if it was from Joe Pesci's character's point of view and there was sex and drugs instead of violence. Will be buying that blu day one and amazed they managed an R rating.
Homeland ended badly, I don't think I'll be watching the 4th season.
No cinema for me for a while. I think I'll wait and catch Hobbit 2 Attack of the Orcs on blu-ray. I read that it ends on a cliffhanger, I hate cliffhangers.
Recent blu-ray purchases - The Croods (good fun), Predator 3D, Jurassic Park 3D, Kick Ass 2 (first was better), The Lone Ranger (not as bad as they say, but keeping Depp in that makeup all thru the film was a major blunder), Vertigo (Hitchcock masterpiece, excellent blu-ray), An American in Paris, Mary Poppins, Oliver!, Streets of Fire (grainy PQ, excellent audio), Heavy Metal the Movie, Wizards (Ralph Bakshi), Wings of Honneamise (anime classic, one of the best), Casablanca (box set with book, poster and coasters!), Star Trek Original Series (All three remastered seasons on blu-ray for £60, a real bargain at Amazon.com and multi-region too)

Been watching a bunch of television and not much else of late. With everything in hiatus I've been catching up on some of the backlog.
Just caught up on Person of Interest and very happy to see it getting its mojo back after some weaker (for me) episodes early in the season.
Catching up on Raising Hope. The season premieres were kind of weak but it has picked up after that (or I'm getting back in the mood for its type of humor.)
Homeland was incredible in season 1 but it has been kind of downhill since then. As much as I enjoy certain aspects of the show (Mandy Patinkin in particular) I have real credibility issues with crazy Carrie still being an operative in the field. If I see Claire Danes cry again in the next five years it will be too soon. I'll probably keep watching because a really good friend of mine still likes the show and we discuss it, but it is a casual viewing show for me now vs. a must see.
I'm catching up on Mob City and liked the first two episodes quite a bit. Probably more style than substance to the series, but the style is very handsome and I'm a sucker for crime / noir tales. I like the casting of the series and hope that the remainder lives up to the first two segments.
Movie-wise I ordered Elysium on Blu-Ray and may try and watch that soon, and a friend has been asking about us re-watching A Clockwork Orange so that may get another viewing in early 2014. We've both watched the film together and apart so often (and it is so quotable) that reciting entire passages of dialog is child's play for the two of us.

I'm ignoring the Hobbit films....how could they "pad" such a short book into 3 films? The LOTR novel was over 1,000 pages long and they had to make drastic cuts to fit it into the extended versions....much less the theatrical versions.

I picked up that massive Criterion Zatoichi bluray so all I've been watching is that and the original series Star Treks on blu was well.
I'll see the new hobbits in the theater eventually I think. I want to see Catching Fire and American Hustle more though.

Amazing how Maureen O'Hara is still hanging out at age 93. She moved to Boise years ago to be near her grandchildren.

A very sunny day here but temperatures didn't get above about 37 degrees F. I took a long drive out over the desert and down the Snake River. I saw 2 Peregrine falcons sitting on rocks by the side of the road, and a bald eagle sitting in a leafless tree. Too bad the eagle didn't take off and fly for me.

Take a look at this cherry Miata steering wheel I bought to replace the worn leather one in the beater Miata. Came from a 1992 car but was pulled early on to install a "trick" steering wheel.

I'm glad I stuck with Person of Interest . Somewhere in Season 1, I don't think I was paying enough attention and I briefly considered dropping it. I love it now and the addition of Shaw was great. And of course, this season had quite a shock.Walter Kittel said:

Dillahunt, Plimpton and Leachman are terrific. I will miss it if it's cancelled. In comparison, New Girl has become terribly annoying.
I saw American Hustle and thought it was pretty good. Extra points for featuring my favorite Steely Dan tune, "Dirty Work", in the opening minutes. I also saw Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues, though I have not yet seen the first one. It was amusing enough and had quite a bunch of nostalgic 80's tunes. (LOVED the inclusion of "Change" by John Waite at the end!!!!!)
Probably see The Wolf of Wall Street this weekend, unless I decide to fit in Philomena before it leaves.
there's a cheat in American Hustle - the ELO song "Long Black Road" heard twice is actually a Japanese bonus track from the 2000 Album Zoom, and NOT a period song which everything else is - it just sounds period cause it's ELO
I disliked American Hustle. I could not suspend my disbelief in the stupidity displayed by the con (wo)men, the FBI agents, or the politicians. All of them would have had to been, at least, clever to get where they were, but no-one in the film displayed even the "smarts" required to survive in the world they were supposed to inhabit.
Fredo could have outsmarted anybody in that film.

A few weeks ago, my wife and I saw Disney's Frozen. It was...okay.
Last week, my son and I went to see The Hobbit: Dereliction of Papa Smurf. It was quite entertaining.
Tonight, my wife, daughter, son-in-law and I went to see Savings Mr. Banks. Best movie I've seen in years! Hands down. Lots of sentimentality. And while it was a film featuring the character of real-life Walt Disney, it also took a page out of Walt's own book and was a story really well told. It is about a story of which I was already pretty familiar...but the script, the acting and the direction were first-rate. This movie actually brought a tear to my eye at the end. The only other film to do that...Toy Story 2 (the When She Loved Me sequence). Emma Thompson was incredible as P.L. Travers. I am still in awe that Tom Hanks was able to pull off the Disney role as well as he did. Colin Ferrell was also amazing as was Paul Giamatti. And the supporting cast, too. All top notch.
I'm sure Hanks and Thompson will get Oscar nods. I hope the film does, too.
