The same reasons shows are broadcast in HD when HDTVs are still a minority of sets out there.

Actually that has more to do with FCC mandates than anything else. A better analogy would be the shows that started shooting in Super35 and protecting for widescreen in the early 90s in anticipation of HDTV and widscreen syndication. (Babylon 5 and Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman being the two pioneers in this regard.) I look forward to the rest of the series, I'm still making my way through S1.
