I know that it's important to have your speakers from the same manufacture but is it equally important that the sub woofer also be from the same manufacturer as the speakers?

Not at all. In fact most speaker manufscturers don't make very good subs.

And timbre matching is not necessary at the sub-bass frequencies, so there's no acoustic reason to stay within a product line.

You need to match your sub to your goals and the size of your entire listening area. At the same time you have both budget and size constraints. Unless you have a very easy going wife like me, you will make some compromises.
