They ran the pilot last night in a preview after the finale of Sparactus Gods of the Arena.. it is definitely different

There are very few outward demonstrations of impressive magic. He's traditionally more of an advisor and sage to Arthur. Most of his power manifests itself in prophecy and vision. He's a very frustrating figure, in many ways--he acts when it serves him, and remains silent/inactive when it serves him.
Personally, I'm enjoying this version of the story to the horrible BBC Merlin, which, in my opinion, is poorly-acted, has absolutely terrible effects, and a script that is embarassingly-bad and childish.
