CULVER CITY, CALIF. (July 24, 2006) – From director Brian De Palma and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, comes a special edition of the gripping film Body Double available on DVD October 3. De Palma (The Untouchables, Mission: Impossible) has created an adult thriller of eroticism and horror, starring actor Craig Wasson (Akeelah and the Bee, The Storytellers) and actress Melanie Griffith (Working Girl, Something Wild) in the role that won her the National Society of Film Critics best supporting actress award. Body Double is the story of how one man’s obsession with voyeurism leads him to witness a grisly murder, thus taking him into the unknown world of strippers and porn stars. A must-have DVD for fans of mystery and suspense, the Body Double Special Edition includes four all-new featurettes, including interviews with Melanie Griffith, Brian De Palma and Deborah Shelton, and it will be available on DVD for an SRP of $19.94.

    Synopsis:

In Body Double, Jack Scully (Wasson) is an unemployed actor, who is asked to house-sit a luxurious hillside apartment. The home offers Jack, a telescopic peek into the bedroom of Gloria Reville (Deborah Shelton, “Pacific Blue,” “Dallas”), who is known to perform arousing stripteases in front of an open window on a nightly basis. When Jake discovers another man also spying on Gloria, he begins an obsessive surveillance of her. When he witnesses a grisly murder and becomes a suspect, Jack finds himself in a world of X-rated films, where he meets sexy porn star Holly Brody (Griffith), who holds the key to the crime.

This is one of my favorite DePalma films. I know it's generally disparaged by most critics, but I thought it was very well done.

This announcement doesn't give any technical details - anamorphic? DD5.1? I didn't feel like registering to get in to www.SPHEPublicity.com and www.SonyPictures.com doesn't list any titles for an October 3 release.

    According to DVD Active:

"The film itself will be presented in anamorphic widescreen, along with an English Dolby Digital soundtrack."

Since Sony makes no mention of remastering etc. (unlike in their announcement for Bugsy) I'm guessing we're getting the same transfer as on the previous edition. I'd like to buy this (love the film, too), however if there's no audio/video improvement I'll think twice about double dipping. There's just too much stuff coming out in the fourth quarter of 2006 as it is.

Another noteworthy fact is that once again they seem to be leaving off the trailer that was on the previous edition. Problem is that the trailer for this film is excellent, I think it even won an award.

Count me also disappointed at the absence of the BODY DOUBLE trailer.

They're also leaving off the music video DePalma directed for "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. Granted, the bulk of the video consists of footage that is already in the movie, but there are also scenes exclusive to the video, such as an amusing FLASHDANCE parody. And seeing as how this video was banned by MTV just as the original "Relax" video (directed by Bernard Rose) was, it would have been nice to have this as an extra feature.

Agreed. The DVD Times page (Thanks, Christian!) lists DD5.1. The original DVD had only a Dolby Surround track, but it's quite good, so I won't be DD'ing just for a DD5.1 track. Was the original DVD anamorphic? I'm still using an old SD CRT, and I don't remember what the box says.

    Thanks,
    Doug

Count me in as a huge fan of this flick. I have the 1998 flipper version. The widescreen side is 1.85:1 and not anamorphic. Both versions are Dolby Surround.

For anamorphic and 5.1, I'll double dip.

DavisDVD lists surround, not 5.1, so I guess it'll remain a mystery for now.

Brett, are you sure the old one is non-anamorphic? The cover doesn't say anything about 16x9 enhancement, but both Rewind and the DVD Profiler entry claim that it is anamorphic.
I can't check myself as I have the German R2 release which definitely is.

The old R1 flipper disc is indeed anamorphic!

I stand corrected. It does not say "enhanced for for 16x9 displays" or "anamorphic" so I assumed it was not.

Even so, it could use a remaster and a 5.1 track, so here's hoping...
