With a 5.1 speaker system costing around $1000-$1200-ish, how much should I be spending on speaker wire/subwoofer cable? Will I be good going with generic Home Depot 12 gauge or what? Thanks.

Sound wise I think you'll be fine. sometimes the cheap wire has corrosion issues as the coatings are not the consistant and if you're in an area with lots of humidity this might be a consideration.

Try the HD-14 speaker cable. Some of the best in the world.
