Sound from TV and Receiver (1 Viewer)

I've had a home theater setup with an older/cheaper Yamaha receiver (RX-V465) for some time. We recently got a new smart TV and I connected the TV to the receiver via Optical cable per the manual in order to output sound from the TV to the receiver so I can use the apps and get sound output from my surround speakers connected to the receiver.

The problem is that with it setup this way sound is output from the TV speakers as well as the surround speakers. Am I missing some step to only get my sound output from my surround speakers instead of both?

What TV?More than likely you just need to set the TV speakers off. How you do that depends on what TV you bought.

Duh, I feel like an idiot. For some reason I thought there should be a way to do it through the receiver

Don't feel bad. Had a client the other day trying to figure out why a UPS wasn't charging...He did plug it in...
