Sony WM40(?) on SALE at Best Buy (1 Viewer)

When I went into Best Buy today, they had the Sony 12" sub on sale for $149. There is a $50 Instant Rebate, good until 10/6. The small store I went into had at least 8 that I could see on hand, so apparently they are selling these, or planning to do so.
Now I have some time to decide if I should get this now, or wait until CC clears out the Velodyne CT series that's being discontinued. Anyone had these go head to head, or have an experience to share? TIA...

I have the Sony, love it and plan to get a second one. However, if the 10" or 12" Velodyne are being sold at similar cost, I would take them based on all they do is speakers (now) but they've been sub specialists for years.

I've heard the Sony and would agree that it probably offers the best bang for your buck but IMO, it's no competition for the Velo CT-120 (which I happen to own) or the CT-100 (which I owned before upgrading to the CT-120) but they will both cost you significantly more than $149, even on clearance.
If it came down to the Sony or the CT-80 I would go with the Sony....from my experience it hits much harder than the underpowered 8" Velo.
Just my $0.02 worth.

In a match of the Sony vs. the Velo, no contest. Get the Velo. If cost is a factor, get the Sony. If not, get the Velo. Keep in mind the Adire Audio Rava is, roughly, the same cost of the Velo. (Specifically the CT-120.) Enjoy!

That sounds like a great deal! Checking the BB website, the Sony SAWM40 is $200 normally; 50% off is pretty sweet. That's less than the KLH 120W/10" sub!
If you're watching the budget, it seems like that price is unbeatable.

Thanks for all of the replies. I hope maybe I helped someone else out, also, looking for a good deal on this.
I don't expect the Velo's to go as low, price-wise, as the Sony. My real question was whether or not the difference was worth the time to wait, or to just go ahead and grab one now. I think I'll ride it out until close to October and make a decision then. Thanks again.

I listened to the WM40 (to the extent that was possible in
the crummy Best Buy listening room), the $350 Polk sub and
the Velodyne CT100. Unlike the Polk or Velodyne, I would
have to turn the WM40 off whenever listening to anything
musical on my HT system. I think it would suffice for doing
thump and bump LFE stuff but it was pretty crude sounding
to my ears.
I ended up buying the CT100 and I leave it on always to
handle everything from 80Hz down from all channels. In my
small (2000 sq. ft.) room, the CT100 is overkill and I
have to keep its volume control turned way down but it does
sound pretty nice. I paid $299 for it "open box" at Circuit
City. So price-wise it is an apple and the WM40 is an
orange but sound-wise there's no question in my mind that
the extra dollars buy extra quality.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that spending a couple hundred more than the Sony's price will get a better sub. Properly postioned, though, it doesn't sound nearly as bad as it can in a store.

I just picked up the SAWM40 a few weeks ago with a pricematch from Sears, and I have been VERY happy with it. It truly is a fantastic sub for the price. If price is an issue, I highly recommend it as it blows any other inexpensive sub I listened to out of the water.
I was just watching "The Goonies" with it last night, and my pictures starting rattling on my walls during some of the heavier bass scenes (for real!); and when it comes to U571 depth charges, fogedaboudit!

I am very happy with this sub, and $150 is a steal if you can find it at your local BB.

I meant 2000 cubic feet. Oops. The room is 16' by 16' (or
256 sq. ft.) with 8' ceilings (or 2048 cu. ft.) so it's not
super-small but certainly not 2000 sq. ft., as Sean points
out.
I was initially surprised at how low the volume knob had to
be set on the CT-100. I have all five speakers set "small"
on my receiver and to balance the subwoofer using Avia's
recommendation the volume knob is just past the first mark
above "Min". I do have it in a corner, though, so it is
probably getting a good room effect.

Can anyone confirm if this is a chain-wide sale on the Sony SA-WM40? If so, are they closing out this model, or is this a temporary sale? If so, till when?
Thanks.

My local Best Buy had it for $149.99 as well, but they didn't have any

Someone said this was a mail-in rebate but the little sign at my local store said "Instant Rebate" so I'd assume it comes off at the register and you only pay the $150. The little sign said it expires 10/6/01.

You mean 25% off? The sale price after instant rebate is $150 right?

Oops, my error. I misread the post, and thought he meant, a sale price of $150 with an additional $50 rebate, for net cost of $100. I see now he meant $150 sale price, period. And that is 25% off :)

Damn! I bought the SA-WM40 about a month and a half ago at BB for $200 bucks. Even worse, I haven't even hooked it up yet! I feel like such a tool...

I'm glad that was clarified. I paid $154 and was getting heartburn reading this new price, now I feel better. The Sony is not bad but it can't get much below 30 hz. Augments my rear surrounds ok.

I snagged one for $150+tax here at my local BB in Jackson, MS. I would assume it is on sale everywhere, you can go to their website and type in your area code somewhere and it will show you the ads from your local paper.
