Thanks for this great, comprehensive list.
Note that it's two years out of date; there have been many more released since. One way to get a more current list is to go to the Warner Archive site (they sell them) and click the Sony Pictures Choice Collection in the left sidebar under "Studios."

Anita Ekberg and her fans have done pretty well out of the Sony MOD series but where is The Man Inside?

Much to my surprise, I discovered (completely by accident) that A Dandy in Aspic made it to a pressed-disc as part of a four-film collection called Soviet Spys - 4 Film Collection (from Mill Creek).

Sorry to bump this old thread, but I wasn't sure where else to post this: i recently bought five different SONY MOD DVD-R titles and none of them will play in any of my six Blu/DVD players.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a contact email address or phone number for SONY where I can report this? As far as I know the DVD-R MOD program from SONY is shut down so maybe I'm out of luck besides getting my refunds from Amazon. I just wanted to know if this failure is due to a bad batch or is a systemic deterioration of the product. I'm wondering whether I should even try to buy these specific titles again. One of them, APPOINTMENT IN BERLIN, I've now purchased three times and none of them would play!

Anyway, thanks in advance for your help.

Sorry to hear a batch of 5 is bad and a little unusual. I have over 1,000 WAC DVD-R but only about 10 from Sony. In my experience I have never had any of them go bad. I recently watched several WAC titles I purchased back in 2009 and 2010 and they still played perfectly. I have only had maybe 5-6 bad DVD-Rs from WAC and they were all when I 1st purchased them. I got replacements for them. I have never had one fail after Initial inspection. So this sounds like a bad batch. All the threads on pressed discs that have gone bad are usually discs that are older than 10 years so no disc should deteriorate that fast.

Don't suppose in your group of players you happen to have a PC/MAC BD-Rom to test the disc's file structure and disc integrity with some program like VSO Inspector? I don't know if the Sony BD-R are actually burn one at a time at time of order or are batch produced and have been sitting around for a while. It would actually make more sense for the former if Amazon's burners are bad rather than multiple groups of older discs going bad simultaneously. Not sure if the disc has just a file date or if there's a way to tell when it was actually burned

Might be worth ordering at least one title from a different source or directly from MovieZyng since as far as I can tell the Choice Line was an AlliedVaughn product at least from non Amazon retailers

Thanks to you and Randy for the helpful info. It is indeed a very perplexing situation as I haven't had too many MODs from any major studio give me trouble. There were a few, but to have five like this all in a row is really a mystery.

I should have specified that none of the discs I purchased were new, they were all used. Two copies of APPOINTMENT IN BERLIN came from eBay, the other one of that title from an Amazon Marketplace seller, My single copies each of EIGHT IRON MEN and THE BLACK ARROW were from Amazon Warehouse. So really, there is no rhyme or reason to any of it.

I haven't run it through a VSO Inspector yet as I'm not too sure how to work that. I did, however, try to play it through two computer programs I have and it wouldn't read in any of those either. Last night I wrote to an email address at SPHE, but it was a more or less last resort contact as none of the ones they provide on their site fit this situation. They have since written back with a form letter telling me to forward my concerns to Sony Electronics and furnished me with an address and phone number. Somehow, I don't think they will help me, but I guess I'll give it a try.

If you have the ability -- VSO INspector is a tiny little freeware program that I find pretty useful to check discs that look scratched or like they might have defects or are skipping/freezing. I found it quite helpful in checking some of my Criterions which were in those BRONZING Batches. Pretty easy -- open program, insert disc, and select scan (surface and/or file scan). It also and do some basic disc ID -- size of disc, type of disc (DVDR, BD25, BD-R, etc); A full scan can take a while so it's not a great program for scanning large numbers of discs, but very nice for an occasional glitchy disc -- makes it easy to distinguish a bad disc, dirty disc, and distinguish a disc vs player issue.

Having that many issues on multiple players (esp the Computer BDROM) says it's almost certainly a disc issue, but doesn't really help narrowing it down too much. Ebay sellers poorly burning their own might explain a single seller, but it multiple sellers and Amazon too points toward a bigger problem

Pretty easy -- open program, insert disc, and select scan (surface and/or file scan).

This only works if you have a computer dvd (or bluray) drive which is capable of doing real scanning. Otherwise such programs either won't do anything, or will just report back multiple re-read failures.

Actual widely available computer bluray drives which can do actual real scanning, have not been manufactured for many years. (Currently only vinpower still makes a computer bluray-r drive which can do actual real scanning of bluray discs).

I didn't know newer PC BD drives weren't capable of what my 2011-2015 era drives could do -- I have a dozen or more (BD-R/RW not all attached to computers currently) from LG, LITEON, Plextor, Pioneer that can. Actually seems odd that they can't since most were designed to be used as multifunction devices, not just playing discs like a standalone.

Current LG and Pioneer bluray-r drives don't appear to be capable of real scanning. (Also Asus rebadges of LG drives).

The current vinpower model which can do real scanning is actually an LG rebadge with a custom firmware they wrote. Apparently the mediatek chipsets used in many current dvd and bluray drives, are capable of doing real scanning if the firmware is actually using any of it. I guess LG and Asus don't want to deal with the headaches of writing their own firmwares to do scanning.

Ok, my brother ran the VSO on his computer for the five affected discs and three of them shared the same Media #. The other two also had the same Media #, but a different one from the first three. By contrast, he ran six other SONY CHOICE COLLECTION DVD-Rs that I own and have had for awhile and they had different numbers from the defective discs. Those all play fine in every player. Here are the numbers from the defective discs:

Media ID: TTHO2

Media ID: MCC03RG2O

I had an online chat with Sony Electronics today, following the contact support link that SPHE sent me. At first they were very confused because I continually had to stress to them it was not a HARDWARE problem. Finally, the rep seemed to grasp the issue and agreed that it was a Sony software issue, not a player one. She said she would escalate it to a higher tier of tech support and that they would call me at the early part of next week. I'll report back here what I find out. Meanwhile, thanks to everyone who has responded and helped.

Do you know when these discs were manufactured? (ie. When did you buy them?)

My last large "cake" of blank dvd discs was TDK. (Though I don't remember the mid code). I have used Verbatim stuff on and off over the years.

In my limited subjective experience, TDK discs made after 2010 were highly inconsistent. (I can't speak for TDK stuff manufactured before 2010).

Verbatim was consistently garbage after 2010.

Generally I do not trust any blank dvd discs manufactured in China or India.

Sorry, I'm a little confused by your questions. Did you miss my original post from earlier today? I am referring to commercially released MOD DVD-Rs from SONY, not retail blank discs. I do not know when these were manufactured nor what brand SONY uses for their commercial releases. As for when I purchased them, just in the last three weeks.
