That's a great summary because it isn't just the oft used whine of "All movies are bad today". It acknowledges that good work is still being done today while still looking at the many reasons (including the audience) why the industry is where it's currently at.

Now you’ve got to remember, the exhibitors pay half of the gross, so to make that 60 back you need to gross 120.

I'm glad he hit this a few times. Most people, many in the press included, seem to think studios make a dollar-for-dollar return from the gross, so that a film that cost $100 million to make and market breaks even with a $100 million gross. That's not the case.

Unless you're George Lucas and negotiate a more profitable graduated gross box office take, starting with a really high percentage opening week,and then the percentages fall in line to "normalcy" after a month of so.

The thing I love about this most is that he's obviously a very articulate, passionate and engaged professional who has his hands dirty in an industry that is constantly driven to produce the least common denominator. And he's OK with it based on the choices he makes that ARE within his control. It's fascinating and complex and maddening.
