Honestly, I would go see Dirty Grandpa, but my problem is not De Niro, it's that there is something that doesn't work for me about Zac Efron. I wish they had just cast an unknown or underknown younger actor in Efron's part. I don't know what it is about him, but for some reason, he just doesn't make me want to see anything he's in.

I could have gotten a Blu-ray of We Are Your Friends to test out the 7.1 core of the Atmos audio, but no. I could have watched Neighbors, as I don't mind Seth Rogen, but no.

And the list goes on.

It's a shame, because I would actually like to watch De Niro ham it up in this movie. But if Efron is all over it (and I know he will be) then for some reason, I just want to stay away. I don't understand why, he seems like a nice kid, but that's how it is.

As for De Niro, I don't begrudge him, or any actor, a paycheck at all, and I'm sure the younger cast all jumped at the chance to work with him, too. De Niro was the reason I went to see The Intern, a movie which mostly worked for me, but needed more of Rene Russo.

I went to Rotten Tomatoes and the film is up to 7% and has probably some of the worst reviews I have ever seen. Pretty much it seems the reviewers there share my sadness that De Niro would accept this role. I'll never watch this film as I saw enough in the red band trailer to convince me this was a horrible idea. Those that have seen it say the jokes fall totally flat, that the performances seem like some sort of amateur talent auditions for a high school play, and the script seems to have been written by a moron that thinks the most disgusting thing on the planet is an older person having sex.

Wonderful.

I did not start this thread to bash De Niro and I still love the guy as an actor and he still seems to be getting offers to do all kinds of roles...my only wish was that when something this lousy (and you can tell by the trailer and now the reviews this is just a brain dead piece of writing) comes across his desk that he pass on it.

The one thing I will say are the reviews are more fun to read than the movie would be to sit through I would say. Just a few of my favorite quotes and the writing below is likely far funnier than anything in this dung heap of a movie:

"This interminable farrago feels like swimming through a sea of excrement."

"So atrocious in every aspect, this is a grotesque affront not just to comedy, but to humanity as a whole."

"Dirty Grandpa is like watching a friend's mediocre improv troupe do an extended spring-break sketch. And your friend just happens to be Robert De Niro."

"God forbid this should be [De Niro's] final role."

"Brit director Dan Mazer has excreted the mightiest blot on De Niro's CV yet."

"To be sure, there's often nothing quite as liberating as a raunchy, foul-mouthed comedy, but the R-rated moments have to be woven into the storyline, not just sprayed onto the screen like a wayward money shot in a porn flick."

"A running gag in "Dirty Grandpa" involves Robert De Niro sticking his thumb in Zac Efron's butt."

"Oh well, at least I can strike "See Robert De Niro wanking" off my bucket list."

"The worst film of Robert De Niro's entire career (or maybe anybody's)."

"You gotta give De Niro a hand (and maybe a tissue) for the way he dives right into this role."

"De Niro works it so hard he probably needed ointment on set."

"It will make you feel bad for yourself, and anyone else who sees it, and anyone else who has to live in the world where it exists as a physical document."

"I'm not saying Dirty Grandpa is terrible, but I fully expect a terrorist organization to claim responsibility for it any minute now."

"Dirty Grandpa feels like spending 100-plus minutes with a scatalogical toddler, proudly showing you what he made in his diaper. Don't look if you don't have to."

"...feels like something you'd find next to a used condom and a discarded can of Red Bull."

"If the idea of Robert De Niro saying 'vagina' a lot or visual gags that portray Efron as a pedophile are your idea of funny, "Dirty Grandpa" will fit the bill."

"Well I certainly feel dirty."

"I began giggling with a kind of metaphysical embarrassment for everyone involved in the enterprise, and, eventually, for all of humanity itself."

"It says a lot about this robustly filthy but shambolic comedy that there is a running gag featuring Zac Efron getting repeatedly punched in the scrotum, from behind, by Robert De Niro."

The way I see it, Keith, at least we get something out of the fact that Dirty Grandpa exists.

I suggested they use the following for promotional purposes:

"As funny as my last trip to the proctologist." -Quentin Tarantino on Dirty Grandpa

{Disclaimer: I made that Tarantino remark up.)

Well, he either did not see 1900 or considers the fact that a woman is taking care of the job in 1900 whereas in Dirty Grandpa it is a self service thing for Robert.

Either way great for the reviewer he can cross that one off.

I haven't rewatched "Showtime" since I brought it home on DVD when it was released. I don't remember Robert De Niro being the problem with that one, but I hardly remember it at all. He may have actually played "Man Collecting A Paycheck" for all I know. So I'm going to watch it again soon, to see if I can agree with your opinion.

Did you ever watch "Showtime" again?

I was probably going to wait for home video to see 'Dirty Grandpa', but the negative nellies in this topic have made me feel like giving it my support in the theater. :)

So did you see it yet?

Well, the bottom line is that De Niro was in some seriously fucked up movies for the last 15 years or so... And I agree that the worst moment of anybody´s career is when they appear in the same movie as some plastic, talentless, fake, soul-less, artificial, factory-made wannabe like Z** E**** (eeeh, I cant even say his name)... Z** E**** is a boy, not a man-get him a nanny.

I can't believe there are 7 pages of people mostly talking about movies and performances they've never actually seen! I have no interest in Dirty Grandpa though I'm sure many people will and I'm also sure there have probably been far worse movies made than this with names just as big as Robert De Niro's. If he never made a "good" movie again, it still wouldn't tarnish his legacy in my eyes. Also, I think I've only seen Zac Efron in Hairspray but thought he was pretty good in that anyway. There seems to be a bit of bashing that seems more centered on his looks rather than on his acting. Just seems kind of rude. Finally, didn't we (sort of) see "Robert De Niro wanking" in Raging Bull?

I have no memory of that at all! I looked at the "Parents Guide" on IMDB and there's no mention of that kind of scene.

Wasn't "Robert De Niro's Wanking" that Bananarama song? :D

Okay, I just watched it for the first time since 2002. It's a weak effort, very badly directed, and poorly conceived. However, I still enjoyed watching it; no smart phones, no CGI, no fast cutting and whip panning in the action scenes, Rene Russo was fun, and William Shatner (as himself) was amusing. It's a fairly forgettable artifact from a different era (it's from "An AOL-Time Warner Company"), but Robert De Niro was more hung out to dry in it than he was sleepwalking through it, in my opinion. He doesn't condescend to the material, and plays it straight. Also, Drena De Niro, one of his step kids, had a minor role in it. Would he have let a family member see him doing less than his best on set (not a serious question)? Anyhow, I'm unlikely to rewatch "Showtime" any time soon, but if somebody came over and wanted to see it, I could sit through it again. A ringing endorsement, right?

Ha, yes, Bananarama! Guess I haven't seen Raging Bull in a long time. Thought there was a scene involving, well, you know, "Robert De Niro wanking?"

I think they should have done this in 3-D because I mean it is one thing to see Robert De Niro wanking, or sticking his thumb up Zac Efron's ass, or punching Zac in the balls but imagine getting to experience these wonders in 3-D!

Probably would have made that Everest movie in 3-D seem like stick figures scratched on a cave wall.
