Sending pure digital signal to receiver. (1 Viewer)

Help, I'm new to HTPC so I'm wondering how I go about this. I have a computer with an nForce2 motherboard and an optical out going to my receiver. However, the receiver can only switch between Stereo and Dolby Digital but neither have sound coming from the surround channels. I do not know what I am doing wrong and what setting it would be. All I would like is to have a digital signal being read and sent to the receiver, how would I go about this? Thanks in advance.

You're only getting 2 channel when playing a dvd...is that right?

What software are you using to play your movies?

Yup, that's right. Currently I am using ATI File Player that came packaged with my Radeon.
