This would be good news in terms of signs of acceptance of high-def media, but I'm a wee bit skeptical of it. More than a wee bit.

Great indeed.

I'm curious how Pirates of the Carribean I and II (coming in May) will each do by comparision. Those are going to be HUGE sellers.

I don't think it would be ridiculous to say at least 1.5x the CR sales for the Pirates films - same with Cars.

Although the variable here is that those three movies have already been released on DVD.

Casino Royale is a brand new title on home video.

Not sure how much of a difference that will make, if any.

Exactly what I was thinking, Sean. Pirates & Cars will be popular, no doubt, but without the "new release" factor that Casino Royale has, I don't think they'll be able to eclipse its sales numbers.

I'd love to be proven wrong, of course.

Good point.

Depends on who's buying CR. I have a feeling CR is selling well to those who already have a PS3 or BD player. Pirates and Cars strike me as more likely to sell players than CR.

Good news indeed! Provides a good counter point to those who argue that HD media isn't long for this world.

I am not sure about this. While I think the Pirates and Cars hold great potential, most people already own them. This was not the case for Casino Royale. While I certainly could be wrong, I still think there are too many people who just don't like double dipping. But it is good to see any HD format beginning to sell numbers like these.

I'd be shocked if the Pirates or Cars discs outsell Casino Royale because as mentioned, CR was a new release so more would be tempted ot get it.

WHatever the case, I am buying the pirates and cars discs so it's all good.:)

Funny all the talk of Pirates eclipsing it, when I had no interest in even seeing the Pirates sequel, especially after the word-of-mouth it got from those I know who did see it. Some day I may get around to renting the sequels, but I doubt I'll ever bother even watching the first one (which I have on DVD) again.

But I suppose I could well be underestimating the "family factor."

I will be buying Cars, and maybe the first Pirates (didn't much care for the second, so I will probably live with the SD DVD).

While 100K sales is impressive (I will be more impressed if the real figures actually stand up the the rumors) but I think much more impressive is the first week sales of nearly 45k of the Departed disks, a much smaller movie and a much more limited audience, even with the Academy awards.
