Only about half the shows on television. Isn't it just a slight variation on all the other procedurals like the CSI's, Law & Order's, Without a Trace, Numbers, Close to Home, etc.?

No, Criminal Minds focuses on FBI profilers from the BSU, so it is a somewhat different kettle of fish than any of the CSIs or most of the other shows you mentioned. The BSU team is more interested in the behavior and psychology of the victim and the offender than in physical evidence, interviews, stake-outs and the like. And because they specialize in serial offenders, they spend a good deal of their time trying to prevent the next crime, rather than solving the current one.

That said, I would say that the show with the "vibe" that is most like Criminal Minds is the original CSI. It also features a team of specialists under a cerebral, detached, somewhat paternal, leader. You can almost imagine Gil Grissom and Jason Gideon switching places without either team missing a beat - which is not true of either of the other CSI series, amusingly enough.

Although I like most of the shows Malcolm named, they are all quite different in their approaches, and not only because some focus more on lawyers than cops, or more on technicians and scientists than cops or lawyers. Depending on what in particular you find appealing about Criminal Minds you might love or hate a show like Numbers or Close to Home or CSI: Miami. (Which I only watch from time to time because I like Emily Proctor and the whole production looks so damned gorgeous in HD. :))

Like I said, I'd start with CSI and then see where you want to go. CSI is mostly made up of stand-alone episodes, except for one or two continuing threads that play out across a single season. But the characters, their personal and professional lives and the relationships evolve over the course of the 6 1/2 seasons the show has been on the air, so you might want to consider checking it out by renting the DVDs. (And buying them after you get hooked. ;)) The second half of season seven starts next month, but if you go the DVD route the whole season will probably be out on DVD by the time you're ready to watch, and you'll be ready to watch season 8 "live"

Joe

law & order: criminal intent,
This popular companion series from the award-winning Law & Order franchise, stars Vincent D'Onofrio as Robert Goren of the NYPD's Major Case Squad; a detective hellbent on getting inside the minds of the city's worst criminals in order to bring them to justice.

I recommend NYPD Blue, or if you're looking for an in sight of a police station - Hill Street Blues
