I am looking to upgrade my Denon 4810 to a receiver that is capable of supporting my 4 ohm speakers and can also drive my subwoofer in Pure Direct mode.. The AVR is overheating a lot due to the lack of support for 4 ohm speakers (i have been told) and the speakers themselves cannot handle frequencies below 40 hertz. If your Denon has preouts, I'd add external amplification, which will improve things more than any receiver. I drive my fronts with Emotiva, and am no longer concerned about overdriving my receiver.

It has preouts. But the speakers cannot be biampwd or biwired. What would happen if i hooked the subwoofer to the subwoofer preout ?? The heat is bearable but the lack of a subwoofer in Pure Direct mode is not..

Pure Direct shouldn't activate the subwoofer in any receiver. It's designed to play back only the channels that are included on the disc. So a stereo source will only be played back in stereo. This should be the same with all receiver brands. Some receivers activate the subwoofer in Direct Mode. I don't think the 4810 does though.

The only way to activate the subwoofer in Pure Direct mode is to hook the sub up to the Front speaker outputs (and not the subwoofer cable) and use the crossover in the sub instead of the receiver. The Front speakers are then connected to the subwoofers speaker outputs.

You don't need to bi-amp or bi-wire the speakers when you use an additional amplifier. You simply don't use the Front speaker outputs in the receiver.

You're supposed to hook the subwoofer pre-out to the subwoofer. It would work as it normally would when using a seperate amp to power the front speakers..

The 4810 doesnt activate the subwoofer in PD mode. So that leaves me with "no bass" in that mode. And the subwoofer doesnt have speaker level inputs or outputs as well. So how do i do it ??

How about in just "Direct" mode (not Pure Direct)? My Marantz 7005 cycles between Auto, Direct and Pure Direct when hitting the Pure Direct button. My Pioneer Elite receivers activate the sub in Direct mode. But the sound quality may not be as clear as when in Pure Direct mode.

My Pioneers are the Elite VSX-23 and SC-25.

On the low-price end of pre-pros, Emotiva and Outlaw are the popular choices.

I'm not a fan of the mid-range pre-pro's as imo they're just regular avr's without the amp section. Might as well just by the cheaper avr with pre-outs. Case in point, the marantz AV7005 is the same as the SR7005 receiver but cost more.

Stereo pre-amps like the Emotiva XSP-1 can really help stereo playback.

Apparently you don't understand Pure Direct. It only plays back, like said already, the source in whatever that source is.It also bypasses the EQ. How is that set? Like it is supposed to be? Smiley face "sizzle"?What are you listening to that has

You could buy an external crossover and connect an amp for your Jamo and run the sub off the crossover. Then you'd switch the AVR set up to "no sub" and run front channel as "full band"(which if you say no sub, it should default to full band). Then, if you care about "yes you have a sub" for .1 content, put in an analog audio switch and use it to switch between the crossover and sub preout. That, there, is your setup...no matter what you do, no matter what you buy.I would keep the 4810 and just relieve it of pushing the main channel Jamo. Crossovers cost $100 to $500. An analog audio switch is $10.Matter of fact, if you incorporate an audio switch, you won't even need to change set up from "yes you have a sub" to "no you don't have a sub"(You also don't even need the external amp...technically, If your sub has two pre-ins you could install the audio switch...even before you buy a crossover/ exterior amp).

Oh yeah, one last question. Is the 4810 sitting in a closed cabinet, or out in the open like it is supposed to be?

Good idea. I will try this. May i also ask, on the 4810, there is a seperate preout for the subwoofer apart from the three regular preouts. Could i use that to drive the subwoofer? It is in an open space. Only gets loud at very high decibel levels!

The point of the analog switch(I would buy a component video switch. Same cable type) is to switch between the main LR preout during Pure Direct and the sub preout for everything else.

Upgrading to a new Pioneer Elite receiver. Has support for 4 ohm speakers and a subwoofer in Pure Direct.
