I'm an old retiree living in the dark ages with a Yamaha RX-V1 doing everything in my 5.1
home theater. I'm getting ready to update some of my system with a new smart hdtv but will
be retaining my power hungry speakers. As my receiver has a beast of an amplifier in it, I
was thinking of going with a newer Yamaha receiver and use it as a pre-pro. Lots of used
ones on both ebay and CL but I don't have a clue as to which model will serve my needs.
I'd like to get a model that can handle the latest video formats even though I'm not going
to spring for a 4K hdtv. Fwiw - I am partial to Yamaha but not locked in concrete as I really
don't have a clue as to what would work best with my RX-V1.

Help please and thanks in advance.

Yamaha, starting with the 6xx, have preouts.HDMI 1.4 handles 4k.HDMI 2.0 handles 4k/60fps.Otherwise...What are you connecting? And what speakers?

I run Polk LSi series all around in my 5.1 setup. Connecting Directv receiver, cd player, dvd player and a yet to be decided
1080p hdtv.

Tnx for the info on the Yamaha receivers.

Polk LSi...

Those are easily handled by...

Any Onkyo/Integra
Any Anthem
Any NAD
Yamaha of at least a 5XX(and everything Aventage)
Denon 4520 and any of the "new ones" above the 3XXX (Denon finally decided to go back to being non-wussified)
Pioneer/Elite that are upper level(that say they are rated 4 ohm)
Marantz 600X or higher.

What price range are you looking at?
What is the max you can or want to spend?
I would upgrade your dvd player to a blu-ray player since you said you are getting an HDTV. You can upscale your dvds and also play hd blu-ray when you get your HDTV.

My Polk LSi's are 4 ohm and why I want to use the amps in my RX-V1 receiver. Tnx for the response.
Fully aware the LSi are 4ohm.Why not buy the $600-ish Outlaw/Emotiva pre-pros?
