posibble to cause burn in on a direct view tube (1 Viewer)

I notice that off the left hand side of my tv is somewhat of a darker vertical strip that comes down when the tv is off. It looks like as if it is a bur in image, but can you actually do that with a crt? It is maybe like a cm or just a bit less but you can only see it when the tv is off.
