I hope I can talk a little
more about why it was held up for all this time
Do you mean you will still be prevented from commenting EVEN after the title's release, whenever that will be, whether it is 2009 or somewhere far beyond? THX. :frowning:

You're joking, mate! Censorship is alive and well on the HTF. You do realise this is Twilight's Last Gleaming we are talking about - one of the most politically subversive movies ever made in Hollywood - so to censor some politically ironic comments by me seems particularly inappropriate.

Adrian,
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Ron Epstein and I
am co-owner of this forum and the person solely responsible for
what you feel is the "censorship" of your posts to this forum.
Tell me, Adrian, when you registered here did you bother to read
the forum rules? I would assume you did since during the registration
process you pressed the OK button allowing you to continue and confirm
that you did.
So, for what reason did this thread deserve a controversial Obama comment
that had little to do with the direction this thread was following? Surely
you were aware that such a post is a violation of one of the strongest policies
we have in place concerning the discussion of religion or politics. Your recent
excuse for posting the comment was an absolute "stretch" as far as I am concerned.
Don't you think your comment perhaps would have invited further political discussion
from someone who might not have agreed with your statement?
So, after being aware of our policies (since you hit OK at signup)
you went ahead and posted a current controversial political comment
which when removed, you then publicly accuse us of censorship. I am certain
that since you are aware of the rules here, you knew that it might have been
better to take this matter up with me privately, but you didn't. Now I have the
need to make a public rebuttal which I rather would have avoided.
I hope all of this was a misunderstanding. I welcome you here, and it
is my hope that you will continue to be a member and respect the rules we
have in place. If you can't, then yes, I am afraid further posts may be "censored."
Thank You

Hey Ron, I know you said you can't tell us, but man. What is the big "secret" about the circumstances of the non-release of this title? This is more secret than the Zapruder Film and the Warren Commission Findings. :D
Can you give hints and/or even a rough estmiate of when things might change?

I'm sorry, John, I really don't mean to create such a mystery
about the reasons this film has not been released as of yet.
The situation is, Warner knows how much this film means to me.
I campaigned to get this released many years ago. When it was
promised, and not delivered, Warner was very kind to call me and
explain the reasons for its delay.
I can't just come out in public and discuss those reasons -- especially
without the consent of the studio. The reason for creating this
"mystery" surrounding the delay was only a way of letting fans know
that the decision to release this film is still a priority with the studio.
When will they finally release this film? I don't know. I had thought
it would finally be out earlier this year with the Burt Lancaster set.
I ceased bothering the studio with questions regarding a release date
because I know there is a specific reason for them wanting to wait.
Believe me...I am just as frustrated over waiting so many years for
this title to see the light of day. However, I know the studio has been
looking at the film elements and they are very optimistic that they
have a potentially fine release on their hands.
I know they are reading this thread. Maybe they will allow me to
come out with a statement on their behalf. Otherwise, The only thing
I can recommend is to continue to post your interests in seeing this film
released. I would also bring it up at the next WB chat that should be
happening early next year. I think by that point they should have a better
idea of where they are situated with this title.

Ron, that's OK, and I wasn't trying to give you a hard time about it. Just wow, very mysterious. Hope we get it soon, maybe 2009.

Dear Ron and Michael - I am most desperately, heartfeltingly, grovellingly sorry and humbled, behaving as I was, like an Englishman with a sense of irony and humour and a general instinctive distrust of governments, banks and movie discussion forums. Rest assured that I will restrict any future postings to a discussion of release dates, aspect ratio, transfer quality etc.
Which brings me to Twilight's Last Gleaming. Will it get a blue-ray release?

Adrian,
Thank You.
Well, we are still waiting for the announcement of a sDVD release
which is definitely in the pipeline, but currently being delayed.
My gut feeling (if that means anything) is that there will be
no BD release. I say that only because this is one of those niche
titles that I don't think the studio will feel deserves a BD release --
especially in a time where smaller classics aren't selling well in
the BD environment. But who knows? By the time this title finally
surfaces BD may be in higher gear and there may be a shift in
attitude towards films of this caliber.
Once again, a belated Welcome Aboard!

Wonderful, some info. ;)
From my POV, the only good reason for the continuing delay was a feature packed BD release. If Mr Epstein does believe that there will NOT be a BD release, I'll take that as pretty good info.
Since it appears we'll ONLY get a SD release, then my continuing position is to get it out the door!! Waiting for another Burt Lancaster set or the release of some other DVD is not from my POV a good enough reason to keep sitting on this title. Since it seems to be a SD release I'm REALLY hoping for it to be released real soon in another Region, like say Japan. In that case, I'll buy it from the other Region. I went thru this same situation with another title - "All That Jazz". I ended up buying it from the UK.

There are other good reasons beyond just waitng on a BD release. Just think about it.

Not sure if this is the reason or not but here it goes.

The film explores the how the military and politicians protect itself from the most dangerous threat of all – the truth. It also exposes one of the reasons that once we were in Vietnam, we found it so hard to get out.

This could be too much of a conspiracy theory on my part for even I to blame, but the film was produced by Lorimar Pictures and released by Allied Artists, which Lorimar purchased in 1980. Warner owns both companies through their purchase of Lorimar in 1989. So there should not be any who owns the right’s problem, however, I am not sure why Key Video (CBS/Fox) ended up releasing the VHS, unless that was their deal at the time since in 1978 Allied Artists was basically bankrupt and did not have a video arm.

So that leaves the only other reason, besides the conspiracy of not releasing a politically charged film during a similar conflict, that someone such as writer, author, producer, or actor has some rights to the film that cannot be cleared.

as to what would prevent a film's release onto DVD beyond marketing reasons
Well Mr Crawford seems IMO to be subtly hinting that the delay is NOT Marketing related. Marketing considerations cover a whole lot of territory & reasons for delays.
I don't know - my brain & way of reasoning logically has never been like other people and perhaps it is even deficient these days. :frowning: ;) To me info that is very closely held by a small number of people who don't spread the info about is a SECRET. I just hope I'm still alive to see this release. ;)
