Pioneer CLD-M90 (1 Viewer)

Picked one of these up at a garage sale with 1 movie for 5 bucks.


Before I go putting a lot of time & effort in to it, I'd like to ask if these units problematic?


So far it does not power up, so I'm going to go get the 4 fuses on the power supply.


Any other ideas or known issues with these that I should know about?

I've played around with the Pioneer M-models a little. This is one with the 5-disc CD tray, right? A quick tip : if it does not power up, or you replace the fuses & they blow, it's probably the surge-suppressor diode on the power supply. It's a known issue with Pioneer players. The idea was to protect them from, say, being hit by lightning, where the fuse wouldn't act fast enough, but sometimes they go bad with age.

Clip the leads on the diode, & if it powers up, that was it. Then, before you use the player, replace the diode with another of similar characteristics.

I've had an M-401 since '94. My first one made it through 1 side of the first movie. My second is still going 17 years later. If you get the chance, remove the top. It works nothing like a carrousel. A square turns and slides on a track, spins and moves out to the cd, picks it up and drops it in the center to be played.

I have an M-401 in my office. I listen to concert LDs and use it as a 5 disc changer. I haven't gotten around to opening it and looking at the mechanism yet. It's a neat player!

Once you open it, you'll want to leave it off! Kind of like being able to see a record change in an old jukebox. It makes for a great conversation starter.

I never owned one but a friend bought and returned one. He hated how slow the changer worked. I was there the day he got it. I was like, if you wanted a quick CD changer, why did you buy an LD player. Of course I knew why...because of The Monkees' Head LD he'd just gotten. Then, he really F'ed up and got a Sony player and had to replace it with a Pioneer player six months later because he hated it's noisey PQ.. I've had two tech's tell me that any of the Pioneers with the 5-disc changer, I think there's 3 models, were the most problematic decks they'd seen. I remember the one I saw making really wanky noises when the changer was used.
