The new remasters come in four different varieties - Discovery, Experience, Immersion and Vinyl. The Discovery series are for newcomers to the music of Pink Floyd as they will feature all 14 albums ”painstakingly digitally remastered” by The Wall co-producer James Guthrie in “newly crafted packaging and booklets created by the band’s long-time artwork collaborator Storm Thorgerson.” You can buy all 14 albums together in the Discovery Box Set or individually.
Unreleased material starts flying in the Experience series which features the remastered versions of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here and The Wall, each with a bonus disc of additional material and expanded liner notes. The Dark Side set includes a previously unreleased recording of the album performed at Wembley Stadium in 1974, Wish You Were Here features outtakes and live material from that era, while The Wall’s bonus material is still to be determined.

The description of the Immersion series particularly caught our attention – “Lavishly packaged in a sturdy 29cm square box, the sets contain remastered, previously unreleased and audio-visual material, plus much additional content – reproduced memorabilia, brand new graphics, art prints, collectors’ items, lavish booklets and more.” Again, only available for Dark Side, The Wall and Wish You Were Here, these boxes will include all sorts of rarities like Richard Wright’s Us and Them demo, Roger Waters’ Money demo, concert films and live material.


Also, each remastered version of Pink Floyd’s album will be available on vinyl with more details about those releases to follow. Finally, a new Greatest Hits collection entitled Best Of – A Foot In The Door will feature 16 remastered tracks. Thanks for the link and info. This is wonderful news. I've been toying for months about whether to purchase OBtW; I am pleased at this point that I have held off. This set looks quite promising.

It's neat too. On my Facebook page, I was recently playing the "Desert Island" game (with which books, music, etc. one would keep for an eternity), and the fourteen studio albums of The Floyd are included on my list of recorded music that would without doubt be in the 'keeper' category.

Immersion edition of DSOTM
Revealed today are details of a huge Pink Floyd release schedule, featuring all the studio albums newly remastered including unreleased music from the archives and collectors' box sets. With three of the major titles coming in three different editions each, there's an edition for every level of fan, from casual enthusiast, to the biggest Floydheads!
The comprehensive release schedule kicks off on September 26, 2011, and encompasses CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, an SACD, an array of digital formats, viral marketing, iPhone Apps and a brand-new single-album 'Best Of' collection. Vinyl editions are also in the works for release in due course.

This gathers together all fourteen studio albums in their Discovery edition version, into one newly designed box, with a specially designed booklet.
EXPERIENCE EDITIONS
Currently, there are three of the Floyd's albums that have been announced for release as an Experience edition. These present the original studio album, digitally remastered by James Guthrie and reissued with a newly designed Digipak and a new multi-page booklet designed by Storm Thorgerson. WISH YOU WERE HERE - SACD
For those who have been, for a few years now, eagerly awaiting the SACD of Wish You Were Here, we have the excellent news for you that it is indeed on its way! The 5.1 SACD will be released by Acoustic Sounds, with the mix done by James Guthrie, and produced by Gus Skinas at the Super Audio Center. We will hopefully have the release date along with ordering information for you shortly.
Naturally, as time goes on we'll bring you more detail on all of these, and more, and will be reviewing each edition so that you can decide what (if any!) you'll be purchasing. And on that note...

Question / Point of clarification. What is the distinction in the following paragraphs? I'm guessing that the first entry ought not to have "Pink Floyd Discovery box set" at the beginning, yes? I think the first paragraph is outlining the individual Discovery Editions (i.e., individual albums), while the third paragraph is outlining the Discovery Edition Boxed Set (all fourteen albums). Does this sound right to you? I just want to be certain. Thanks.

I would say that the first paragraph is describing the Discovery Edition series as a whole while the second is describing the boxed set. I mean, really all the boxed set is is the individually released albums in one box with some "special" stuff added.

Thank you. That sounds right.

This thread has inspired me to some extent. While exercising tonight, I listened to Wish You Were Here (album). For many years it has included one of the most interesting uses of G minor I've heard on a rock album. I also I think Welcome To the Machine may contain the most protracted use of magadizing I've ever heard in any genre of music since ca. 1950 or so, although there are some examples in much earlier musics that use the technique for extended periods of time. Pink Floyd has used the texture deliberately (meaning they did not have to do this by default given their respective vocal ranges) for many years, and I greatly appreciate it as the sound world is intriguing on a number of levels.

This really is good news. I'm thrilled that Ron decided to post it today.

I was thinking the box was a pretty good value at basically $10.50 per remastered album (including the 2-disc Ummagumma and The Wall sets). Glad I got my pre-order in earlier today at that price.

In Rolling Stone piece on the reissues, Nick Mason says "I really think that this could be the last chance for really nice packaging – boxes, books, the whole thing."

He's probably right about that. The only silver lining in this impending move to all-digital is that we might start to see some truly definitive collections in the next couple of years.
