I had dinner with Sandy tonight and we had a good toast to RAF and shared many memories of him. Will send your words and thoughts Bill, thanks! And condolences for your own losses!

I very much enjoyed RAF's participation in this forum and I know many of us will miss him! RIP RAF! It is hard to believe it has been almost 1 year already!

Imagine my surprise after a several year hiatus to read this news over a year after it happened. I remember RAF well. I remember his home theater project as he built an addition to his house. Most of all I remember his smiling face at all the HTF events I attended.
RIP RAF.

Back in the 1980s, RAF contributed many great arrangements to the Orchestra-80/85/90/CC computer music community on Compuserve and he inspired me to experiment more with my own arrangements. Today I was listening to one of them (using two layers of emulation to reproduce that TRS-80 music sound) and thought to search on his name. I was sad to learn that he's now gone.

I'll go listen to more of his work.

Over 10 years ago, when I was in university, I was very heavily into home theaters and movies. I used to spend a lot of time reading on HTF and on the internet in general, checking out equipment and learning about esoteric configurations and specialist brands. I can still remember being in awe of the RAF home theater in those days; I used to keep going back to Dr, Fowkes' website, seeing the new stuff he had put into his home theater. He was the person who inspired me to actually dream of setting up my own front-projected home theater. I was amazed that someone would actually go to the effort of making an addition to their home just to have a dedicated space to watch movies... This was AWESOME.

After graduating and getting buried in the corporate world, I got married, and had a (now 2 years old) son. Needless to say, I haven't had much time to do HT research in the past few years! I do have an LCD-TV based theater at home in my basement, and my love for movies and my dream of a projector based theater has never dimmed (pardon the pun).

This morning, I thought of the RAF theater for some reason, and decided to look it up again. Sadly, I happened upon this thread. Home theater geeks (and the world in general) have lost a really great source of inspiration, and he will be terribly missed. Thanks, Dr. Fowkes, for everything.

Thanks for the note. I'm sure we'll continue to hear from others who fell into the wake of RAF's enthusiasm for the hobby.

We all love to keep hearing these stories. Thanks for writing.

And please keep in mind that we've got a number of enthusiasts/experts here who continue to try and live up to the standard RAF set at this site so many years ago. Feel free to come back any time and ask questions as you start to think about setting up your own home HT.

Argh, don't remind me -- I was in California last week for the first time in years, and didn't get a chance to go!

On the plus side, had a BUNCH of meals in Oakland Chinatown. Mm, good! (And cheap! :) )

Damn you Sam!

RAF was a very special person. His knowledge of electronics, computers, chemistry, education, movies....
the list goes on and on and I had the very high privledge of calling him friend for over 14 years. Ron and I had the great thrill of seeing RAFs HT in person and as great as it looked in pictures it was even better in person. He loved being the inspiration to others and loved even more being inspired by others.

I miss and think of him daily.

I've been absent from HTF, so I missed this announcement until just now. I've been rather busy the last few years.

I'd like to say that RAF was one of the nicest people I never met.

Bon Voyage.
