These will be the winners:

The Departed
Martin Scorsese
Forest
Mirren
Murphy
Hudson

Original: LMS
Adapted: Departed

Animated: Cars
Foreign: Pan's

Art: Pan's
Costume: D-girls
FX: Pirates
Makeup: Pan's
Cinematography: Children of Men

Doc: Inconvenient

These I'm not quite so sure about:

Editing: Babel
Score: Queen
Song: "Listen..."
Sound mixing: D-girls
Sound editing: Letters

I strongly feel the supporting roles should both be going to other actors. In my book, Rinko deserves to walk away with it. Thelma also deserves to walk away with editing, but Mirrione is no slouch, and Thelma won in '04. Lubeczki (sp) deserves the hell out of his award, as does Monohan. Babel may walk away empty-handed, or with only one award. LMS may end with nothing but screenplay, and Dreamgirls with only 2, after all is said and done. One thing we know, there won't be a sweep this year.

This is Marty's day. I feel it. I really feel it. I say director without question AND picture, if only by a nose. Yeah.

Regards,
Nathan

Not that it's terribly important, but I have a strange feeling that Pan's Labyrinth will win the most total Oscars (5).

Talk about impossible to call for Best Picture...

I'm leaning towards Little Miss Sunshine since it does have the advantage.

Ok here are my guesses.

Best Motion Picture of the Year: Babel
I would prefer Little Mrs. Sunshine but Babel is the type of movie the Academy likes to pick.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role: Forest Whitaker
I think Gosling’s performance is far more deserving of the award but Whitaker will get the nod. It’s not that Whitaker’s performance is not good it’s just that the role is fairly easy one when compared to Gosling’s. Whitaker’s over the top performance is reminiscent of Washington’s from Training Day.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role: Helen Mirren.
She is the one I would have voted for also.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role: Eddie Murphy.
The Academy just loves comic actors when they play a dramatic role.
I would vote for Alan Arkin who gave a wonderful performance.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role: Jennifer Hudson
I would have voted for Adrian Barraza.

Best Achievement in Directing: Martin Scorsese.
You might as well just call this a lifetime achievement award although I would not be surprised if Eastwood wins his third Directorial award.

Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen: Little Mrs. Sunshine

Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published: Children of Men

Best Achievement in Cinematography: Children of Men

Best Achievement in Editing: United 93

Best Achievement in Art Direction: Pan's Labyrinth

Best Achievement in Costume Design: Dreamgirls

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Score: Pan's Labyrinth

Best Achievement in Music Written for Motion Pictures, Original Song: "Listen", Dreamgirls
Best Achievement in Makeup: Apocalypto

Best Achievement in Sound: Pirates

Best Achievement in Sound Editing: Flags

Best Achievement in Visual Effects: Pirates

Best Animated Feature Film of the Year: Cars

Best Foreign Language Film of the Year: Pan's Labyrinth

Best Short Film, Animated: The Little Matchgirl

Best Short Film: Binta

Best Doc: Inconvenient Truth

Best Doc, Short: Leon Fleisher

:) Children of Men is my Oscar Winner for Best Picture of 2006. :)

My Predictions (not necessarily who I think should win, but who probably will)

BEST PICTURE
Babel
The Departed
Letters from Iwo Jima
Little Miss Sunshine
The Queen

close one here...could go to The Departed as well.

BEST ACTOR
Leonardo DiCaprio - BLOOD DIAMOND
Ryan Gosling - HALF NELSON
Peter O'Toole - VENUS
Will Smith - PUSUIT OF HAPPYNESS
Forest Whitaker - LAST KING OF SCOTLAND

DiCaprio is also very deserving...

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Alan Arkin - LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE
Jackie Earle Haley - LITTLE CHILDREN
Djimon Honsou - BLOOD DIAMOND
Eddie Murphy - DREAMGIRLS
Mark Wahlberg - THE DEPARTED

Wahlberg was fantastic but was his role big enough?

BEST ACTRESS
Penélope Cruz - VOLVER
Judi Dench - NOTES ON A SCANDAL
Helen Mirren - THE QUEEN
Meryl Streep - DEVIL WEARS PRADA
Kate WINSLET - LITTLE CHILDREN

Mirren was THE Queen.

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
Adrianna Baraza - BABEL
Cate Blanchett - NOTES ON A SCANDAL
Abigail Breslin - LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE
Jennifer Hudson - DREAMGIRLS
Rinko Kikuchi - BABEL

Hudson is the favorite but would love for Abigail to bring it home.

BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
CARS - John Lassetar
HAPPY FEET - George Miller
MONSTER HOUSE - Gil Kenan

Pixar's streak might get broken here.

ART DIRECTION
Dreamgirls - John Mayer, Nancy Haigh
The Good Shepherd - Jeannie Oppewaal, Gretchen Rau, Leslie E. Rollins
Pan's Labyrinth - Eugenio Caballero, Pilar Revuelta
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - Rick Heinrichs, Cheryl A Carasik
The Prestige - Nathan Crowley, Julie Ochipinti

CINEMATOGRAPHY
The Black Dahlia - Vilmos Zsigmond
Children of Men - Emmanuel Lubeski
The Illusionist - Dick Pope
Pan's Labyrinth - Guillermo Navarro
The Prestige - Wally Pfister

Seems like most here are picking Children Of Men...I hope I'm wrong.

COSTUME DESIGN
Curse of the Golden Flower - Yee Chung Man
The Devil Wears Prada - Patricia Field
Dreamgirls - Sharen Davis
Marie Antoinette - Milena Canonero
The Queen - Consolata Boyle

BEST DIRECTOR
Clint Eastwood - LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA
Stephen Frears - THE QUEEN
Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu - BABEL
Paul Greengrass - UNITED 93
Martin Scorsese - THE DEPARTED

Scorsese is certainly due but I think Eastwood's dual picture feat of Flags & Letters cannot be denied.

DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
Deliver us from Evil
An Inconvenient Truth
Iraq in Fragments
Jesus Camp
My Country, My Country

EDITING
Babel - Stephen Mirrione, Douglas Crise
Blood Diamond - Steven Rosenblum
Children of Men - Alex Rodriguez, Alfonso Cuarón
The Departed - Thelma Schoonmaker
United 93 - Clare Douglas, Christopher Rouse, Richard Pearson

One of the many strengths for United 93...Children of Men also a strong contender. Tough choice here as all were excellent

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Denmark - AFTER THE WEDDING
Algeria - DAYS OF GLORY
Germany - LIVES OF OTHERS
Mexico - PAN'S LABYRINTH
Canada - WATER

MAKEUP
Apocalypto - Aldo Signoretti, Vittorio Sodano
Click - Kazuhiro Tsuji and Bill Corso
Pan's Labyrinth - David Marti and Montse Ribe

MUSIC - ORIGINAL SCORE
Gustavo Santaolalla - BABEL
Thomas Newman - The GOOD GERMAN
Philip Glass - NOTES ON A SCANDAL
Javier Navarette - PAN'S LABYRINTH
Alexandre Desplat - THE QUEEN

SOUND EDITING
Apocalypto - Sean McCormack, Kami Asgar
Blood Diamond - Lon Bender
Flags of Our Fathers - Alan Robert Murray, Bub Asman
Letters from Iwo Jima - Alan robert Murray
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - Christopher Boyes, George Watters II

Personally, Apocalypto was the best here but it won't win.

SOUND MIXING
Apocalypto - Kevin O' Connell, Greg P. Russell, Fernando Camara
Blood Diamond - Andy Nelson, Anna Behlmer, Ivan Sharrock
Dreamgirls - Michael Minkler, Bob Beemer, Willie Burton
Flags of Our Fathers - John Reitz, Dave Campbell, Gregg Rudloff, Walt Martin
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - Paul Massey, Christopher Boyes, Lee Orloff

Read comment above

VISUAL EFFECTS
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest - John Knoll, Hal Hickel, Charles Gibson, Allen HallPoseidon - Boyd Shermis, Kim Libreri, Chaz Jarrett, John Frazier
Superman Returns - Mark Stetson, Neil Corbould, Richard R. Hoover, Jon Thum

Pirates in an easy one.

BEST WRITING - ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
BORAT - Sacha Baron Cohen, Anthony Hines, Peter Baynham, Dan Mazer
CHILDREN OF MEN - Alfonso Cuaron, Timothy J. Sexton, David Arata, Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby
THE DEPARTED - William Monahan
LITTLE CHILDREN - Todd Field, Tom Perrotta
NOTES ON A SCANDAL - Patrick Marber

Children of Men was brilliantly written...Another tough call as all were great.

BEST WRITING - ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
BABEL - Guillermo Arriaga
LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA - Iris Yamashita, Paul Haggis
LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE - Michael Arndt
PAN'S LABYRINTH - Guillermo del Toro
THE QUEEN - Peter Morgan

If it's for the most clever & original, then it's Miss Sunshines.

Well bitterness comes from decades of "WHAT? BRAVEHEART SUCKED!" followed by "WHAT? TITANTIC SUCKED!" followed by "WHAT? CHICAGO SUCKED!"

It gets old, I get frustrated and out comes the pre-emptive strike of sarcasm, what can I say. I do think there were some valid points in there, but they are the same ones that any person who doesn't hate the Oscars eventually has to make every single year.

I haven't been to the discussion thread but I can already imagine.

In regards to this thread, did anyone guess that Pan wouldn't win Foreign?

I thouht Pans' was a shoe-in for Foreign Film. Especially after winning before that for Makeup, Art Direction & Cinematography.

Children of Men got NADA. Really upsets me. :frowning:....

12 right this year. Got all of the big ones except Supporting Actor. (didn't see that one by a mile) The little awards were all over the place this year and I can't believe Pan's lost. Overall I'm happy with most of the winners. Glad Scorsese had his golden boy. :D

There's gonna be a lot of renewed talk today of whether or not Norbit cost Eddie Murphy his shot at Oscar. I haven't seen Little Miss Sunshine, so I won't comment on whether or not Alan Arkin was deserving of the award, but it was quite the shocking upset.

13/21 attempted picks, not so great. Disappointed to see Children of Men get totally shut out.

Anyone do better than 12 right in this prediction thread?

We have to crown a winner?:)

And to be fair, you had to make 24 picks.

I think I got 13 correct. Better than usual for me. :)

Pan's Labyrinth not winning Best Foreign Film was a shocker I thought that was one of the few I'd definitely get right.

13/21. Very good Steve. You should have just taken guesses in the other categories. It could have been a decisive victory.;)
