Will my SD dvds look noticably better on my Panasonic 42 inch plasma with the OPPO DV-970HD (I assume thru the HDMI port) ? Any cons ?

The Oppo 970 is arguably the best budget DVD player in its price range. What DVD player do you currently own that you are comparing to? What model Panasonic Plasma do you own, and what is its native resolution?

I have the TH-42PX60U and some kind of Sony progressive scan dvd player that's a few years old.

Since you posted this in the HD-DVD area, I'm going to pose the obvious question. You do know that the Oppo player is an upconverting player, NOT a true hi-def player, right?

Your SD DVD's will look noticeably better played through a Toshiba HDA2 as well

Plus you will be able to play HD DVD's if you want

Yeah, if you're just looking to upscale DVDs you might want to get the A2 if you don't mind spending the extra $100 (unless you own a lot of imports).

The main advantages to the Oppo 970 are:

1) upscaling over component
2) SACD playback
3) DVD-Audio playback
4) PAL-NTSC conversion
5) Region Free Capability

No, the A2 cannot do SACD (I don't think it can do DVD-A either), and I don't think it is region free.

Definitely not region free for standard dvds and no DVD-A or SACD. This is why I have an Oppo and an A1.
