Besides being "long in the tooth" (the current generation is X600, about to go X700 in March)...

As long as you plan on upgrading the crappy speakers in 18 months...the AVR is worth it.

Every pre-package has less than stellar speakers. But that package makes an attempt at "just barely sucking" instead of wholeheartedly sucking.

There is an Onkyo NR609 on Ebay(currently $127.50) that ends in 4 days.It is repaired with the updated HDMI board. Should sell in the $250 range(as the 616 is on A4L for $350).A4L has a slew of AVR under $300.A4L also has the Yamaha NS6490 for $99.99(one pair left)Ns AW194 for $69.99(2 pairs if 7.1)Appears the only Yammy center there is the Ns P150(yawn).They have BA and Mordaunt Short that will fit $1000 as well.

I'm seriously lost as to what to do right now...I need projector, speakers (7.1), receiver, screen.I'm in south central PA.Any guidance would be appreciated before I blow my money on a less than desirable system.Friends and relatives are coaxing me in all directions and I really need solid info to make an informed purchase.A4L is where I'd prefer to purchase and I have no qualms with refurbs.Ohhh lawwwddddd!!!

What do you need the AVR to do/provide?Figure that out. Then it is downhill.Just be thankful Technics, Kenwood, JVC and 500+ speaker brands...no longer exist. Buying today is easy cause the market has contracted to about 40% of the brands that existed 15 years ago.

The cheapest 7 channel is the NR515. Unless there is a Pioneer currently lower. Don't care if a Sony is less..1 and .2 are the same thing(when spending under $1800). The .2 is simply a mono split internally, saving you a 50cent add-on RCA splitter from Amazon.

Craigslist is the best place to buy speakers. Give us your location and we'll see what's available. Ac4l for the receiver so you get a warranty. Partexpress.com for a decent in-expensive sub if there's nothing on CL.

The 9400 is the best receiver/speaker package out there but you can do better on ac4l and CL.
