After watching more than 100 horror movies in last year's challenge, I found it strange to go back to watching movies where people weren't getting killed.

I plan to! I have stuff like The Stepfather still on tape since I didnt get around to converting it. I did convert The Gate from the 80s.

I always find it strange to go back to "regular ones" too...and feel bad that there is usually a fair amount I couldn't get to. But once I do start viewing non-horrors they seem so nice and calming.

I just watched The Fortress, the 80s film with Rachel Ward about the kidnapped school kids. That's one of those that I never know if it should be included or not. It does have some scenes that sure look like horror, lots of suspense and even some gore. Definitely a thriller. I think next year I'll include it in the marathon. Man, I love this film! I can't recommend it enough.

Yeah, I can see where some might think a particular film 'counts' whereas another might not. It should still be a good time.

I love the Fortress. I used to watch it every time it aired on HBO back in the day. An Australian gem. Yes, it absolutely qualifies as a scary movie. Those kidnappers in those spooky masks(especially Father Christmas) had me terrified when I used to watch it. It still remains one of the spookiest movies I own. Rachel Ward was also pretty easy on the eyes in the film

I did too! We got HBO in the 80s and Fortress has so much nostalgia. Im really glad it holds up so well too. The settings are amazing. It's not always 100% believable but it doesn't matter.

Yeah, the masks were such a great idea. That dude as Father Christmas was scary in and out of that mask!

I had the hots for all the older girls back in the 80s. They do a good job with the vulnerability of that older girl. There's truly some fear for her and Ward's character. But that scene in the barn turns things around. I love that! "That's a mighty big gun!"

I think the material is acceptable as long as it's "Halloween themed," stuff like Young Frankenstein for instance. If it has ghosts or monsters you should be in the clear even if it isn't a "scary movie."

I saw the standards got stretched so far last year that they included Transformers. Transformers are not monsters.

This is the basic way I think as well. I wouldn't include something like Transforners... but I do include some stuff that is not what I would call strictly horror... as I do watch some Comedy-Horror such as Young Frankenstein, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dracula: Dead and Loving it... and so on.

For me it's as much a nostalgia-thon as it is a Horrorthon. I'd usually include stuff that a Shock Theater type late show would play which often had sci-fi and whatnot. But these days I truly try to keep it horror.

Stuff like The Explorers, the 80s kids sci-fi film, just feels right. Sure, no horror in there, but there is a scene that shows one of the kids watching an old movie (War of the Worlds, I believe). Now, WotW is sci-fi but has scary elements. I have the Speilberg remake on my shelf and might watch it this year as I did last year.

I would hope that The Shining (Nicholson-Duvall version) would count. At the least, it has some music that has some Halloween-ish overtones (the Dies Irae performed on brass -- and it's so fitting).

Not to single you out but I don't think a movie should be put in the list unless you consider it a horror title. By no means am I trying to tell you or anyone what to watch and I'm not trying to declare myself boss of the thread but I think listing movies like The Explorers may lead to snide remarks or arguments. I don't want to deflate anyone's enthusiasm for the challenge- I just want to cut off any potential problems.

Oh yeah, Explorers is clearly sci-fi. That's exactly why I mentioned it. It's not horror yet it "feels right" during October for me personally. I might get in trouble next month with my choices. I just know I'll be pushed down in the mud and my Halloween candy bag snatched. :frowning:

Oh, I'm here and in the other thread.

I'll be lucky to get 31 unless I can figure out a way to get more viewings in. I'm going to try and watch mostly older stuff that I haven't seen in 10-15 years but of course will be starting out with FRANKENSTEIN (1910) as I do each year.

The main problem that I think some people had last year was when someone was counting a 10 minute short film because it had a horror theme. To spend on hour of time to watch 6 shorts and to count it as 6 movies makes it harder for the people who only count full length horror movies to keep up with the movie count.

I was considering not doing the challenge this year, but as it gets closer to October I always feel the itch. I always have big plans too, but then hockey season starts and it makes it much harder. I guess I will just do as many 2 movie days as I can during the week, and then start early on the weekends!
