...and he could be waiting at the end of your hallway as you were walking to your bedroom to go to sleep after watching the damn thing.
:jawdrop:
I have thoughts like that all the time.
Last night, I was thinking as I turned off the lights in my kitchen then went to the fridge to get a last drink of water before bed, what if I opened the refrigerator door and the light revealed someone/something standing right next to me in the dark.
I used to live in an apartment that had an enclosed stairway with a 90-degree angle leading up to the second floor bedrooms. I often wondered what I'd do if I started up the stairs one night with the lights on, then just as I approached the bend, the lights went out when someone at the top of the stairs (out of sight) flipped off the switch.
It's amazing that I still watch horror films, considering the scenarios I come up with in my own mind. :D

31. The Prowler
A World War II soldier takes being dumped really badly and then 35 years later, more people are turning up dead. As far as I'm concerned, this is one of the best slasher movies. Great Tom Savini effects, nice atmosphere, some suspense and just a dark hard edged movie. Outside of Halloween and one or two Friday The 13ths, this is the gold standard of slasher pictures.
32. Psycho (1960)
A woman steals money from her boss and checks in at a motel run by a weird young man. After all the slasher movies, I thought I'd class it up a bit and watch Psycho. An undisputable classic.
I'll be doing my usual Halloween tradition and watching Halloween and Halloween II again so my grand total is 32. With the hurricane-related power outage, I was worried about making 31 but I got there.

I do the same thing. A few weeks ago, I was looking after a friend's house and I stopped in right after seeing Sinister. As I was pulling into the driveway, I suddenly had the idea of "what if a maniac like in the movie is in there?" (the most likely outcome of that question is that he wouldn't be able to kill me because the second I saw him, I'd have a heart attack and die). As I was walking through the darkened house, I said "Sure is spooky in here" to amuse myself and keep me from running out the house like a wuss.

34. Strangler of the Swamp (FTV)
Nice little creeper from 1946 (although it felt more like a 1930's movie with its low production value). The ghost of a wrongly-executed ferryman comes back to get his revenge on the town that done him wrong. This felt like a B-grade Val Lewton picture at times, with all the shadows and darkness. I loved the deliberately out-of-focus boogeyman effect, it was creepy and menacing. It's movies like this that make me wish black and white film was used more often, it raised the film above its source material. This was a fairly short movie so there really isn't much more to say about it.

When I saw Halloween for the first time in the early 80s I imaged for about a week that Michael was at the foot of the darkened hallway leading to my room. Kept seeing that in my head. We lived in a split level house, so that didn't help. All those places to hide... no telling how many hours of sleep Michael claimed, that dark shaped bastard! I didn't tell anybody about that at the time because I didn't want to be called Chicken. But I was...erm, chicken. Very much chicken. Bock! Bock! Bock! :(

JACK AND DIANE will have to wait until next month. I decided to watch an Ed Wood film to close this year out.
The Wolf Man (1941)
Universal's last true masterpiece (although more great films would follow) has Lon Chaney, Jr. playing Larry Talbot, a man who returns to his hometown where he's bitten by a wolf and slowly turns into the title creature. THE WOLF MAN has countless logical flaws it in (Bela a four legged wolf, Larry a two) but there's no question that it packs a really big emotional punch and I think it could be argued that it's the studios most tragic character. I think technically the movie is near flawless as it contains some wonderful cinematography and the use of fog and shadows is just perfect. It also doesn't hurt that you've got Jack Pierce's terrific make-up, which ranks among the best of his career. The look of the title character certainly deserves its legendary status and it's rather remarkable to see how well it holds up all these decades later. The biggest thing going for the film are the performances with Chaney leading the way. The actor has never gotten the credit he deserved but the sympathy he makes the viewer feel for his character is without question the most important thing in the picture. It also doesn't hurt that he's got such a strong supporting cast of character actors and as a film buff it's really amazing to see how terrific the cast was here. Not only do we get Chaney but he's surrounded by the likes of Claude Rains, Warren William, Ralph Bellamy, Evelyn Ankers, Patric Knowles, Maria Ouspenskaya and Bela Lugosi. The film has an incredibly fast paced, some real nice tension and of course the ending really packs a punch. THE WOLF MAN is clearly a legendary picture that delivers just about everything you could hope for from a horror picture.

Crowhaven Farm (1970)
Hope Lange and Paul Burke play a couple who inherit an old farm house and they decide to move in hoping that it could bring them closer together. As soon as they arrive the wife feels as if she has been here before and soon she discovers that it used to be used for a witch's coven. Was she at one time a witch? CROWHAVEN FARM is one of many witchcraft movies that was released after ROSEMARY'S BABY and it was also made for television so that should tell you something. These made-for-TV horror films do contain a certain appeal and I do see how someone might have watched them as a kid and found them scary but when viewed today they're all rather too simple and feature too few good moments to make them work. This one here features some very good performances from the cast but unfortunately the story itself just doesn't offer us anything we haven't already seen many times before. The film offers up a few twists and turns but everything is just so obvious that you don't fall for any of them. Many of the twists you'll see coming simply because earlier hints in the movie are so obvious that you know the film only has one way to go. A perfect example involves the husband, a shotgun and someone who he thinks might be messing with his wife. Just look at the way this scene is presented and it's just so obvious that it's going to eventually happen. Lange and Burke are both very believable in their roles and I thought Lange deserves a lot of the credit for keeping the film watchable. She's certainly good in the role and you really do feel that she's someone losing her mind. The great John Carradine appears briefly but can't add much. CROWHAVEN FARM has a good setting and some nice atmosphere but in the end it just doesn't offer enough to make it worth viewing.

The Ape (1940)
Boris Karloff plays a kind-hearted doctor trying to cure a woman who is paralyzed from her waist down. When a giant ape escapes from a local circus the doctor sees a woman to continue his experiments but this leads to murder. THE APE comes from Monogram and I think it's the perfect example to use if one wanted to compare the "straight" Boris Karloff to the more "over-the-top" Bela Lugosi. Lugosi would appear in Monogram's THE APE MAN, which is a very silly film that has several silly moments but it's actually entertaining thanks to the campy stuff. This film here is just incredibly stiff, lacks any real entertainment and really comes across as boring. The film seems constantly worried that they're going to hurt Karloff's good guy image and no matter what happens through his character, the screenplay is always quick to give some sort of excuse to make him look good. The character is basically a murderer but instead of just being a bad guy, the screenplay is constantly making him look better and all the excuses just leads to a rather boring story. Karloff offers up a good performance but it's certainly not enough to liven up the film or make it more interesting. The supporting cast is mostly forgettable but I'm sure some of this is due to the screenplay simply not giving them much to work with. THE APE has a pretty forgettable story and there's just no life, energy or passion to be seen anywhere. The film is certainly better made than most Monogram movies but that doesn't lead to any sort of entertainment value.

Bowery at Midnight (1942)
Professor Karl Wagner (Bela Lugosi) is a highly respected man who helps run a food kitchen that feeds homeless and poor people. At night he's taking advantage of the same people forcing them to do his illegal crimes including murder. BOWERY AT MIDNIGHT is yet another low-budget quickie from Monogram and while the story itself is pretty lacking, the film remains watchable thanks to a fast pace as well as the performance from Bela Lugosi. It's really a shame that the film doesn't feature a tad bit more life because it could have been something rather good had more time with the story been done. Lugosi is very good in the lead role and it's funny that during the opening credits his name appears twice for playing the two characters. One of the biggest reasons that the film works as well as it does is because Lugosi is very believable as both the good guy and the bad guy. I really liked the way Lugosi played the good professor because he made you believe that this guy couldn't be doing anything wrong. That cheerful glee from the bad guy also comes across flawlessly and especially when he gets to show how cold blooded the character is. Wanda McKay is good in her supporting role as the woman helping Lugosi not knowing exactly what he's up to. The rest of the supporting players fit their roles nicely and certainly help keep the film moving. The biggest problem is that the story just needed a little bit more work to make it something more than just a routine "B" picture.

Mad Monster Party? (1967)
Animated film has Dr. Frankenstein (Boris Karloff) inviting all sorts of monsters to his house as well as his young nephew. What people don't know is that the doctor plans on retiring and wants his rather dorky nephew to take over for him. This animated feature is certainly a favorite to many who grew up with it and I understand what they'd enjoy. I'm sure being a kid who loved monsters this here would be terrific because there are simply so many on hand. The problem I've always had with this film is that I think it would have been better served as a television special that way it wouldn't come with a 96-minute running time, which in my opinion is just way too long and it really sucks the story dry. I say this because the idea of a monster (Dracula) revolting against Dr. Frankenstein isn't exactly the greatest story idea ever made and this is clear because the film just starts to run out of gas because it doesn't have anything there to work with. The film is certainly creative and it appears that the filmmakers were fans of the genre. I think the best character is a clear homage to Peter Lorre and I thought this one was delightful whenever he was on the screen. The Frankenstein doctor is also memorable thanks in large part to the vocal performance by Boris Karloff. The monsters are another major plus as we've got all the big guys here including Dracula, the Mummy, Frankenstein's monster, the hunchback, the creature, Jekyll and Hyde and countless others. I really thought all the monsters looked fantastic and there's no question that their look will put a smile on the face of monster fans.

The Sinister Urge (1960)
Edward D. Wood, Jr.'s hard-hitting look at the smut business has Lt. Carson (Kenne Duncan) and Sgt. Stone (Duke Moore) trying to solve a couple murders where the victims had just taken part in the pornography world. They believe the victims can be traced to a certain woman (Jean Fontaine) but they need to find out who's actually doing the killing. THE SINISTER URGE is Wood's attempt to show how ugly and evil the porn business is so I guess it's kind of ironic that this would be his last directing job for ten years until he would start working in, you guessed it, the porn business. As you'd expect, this here is a pretty poor film that like most of Wood's stuff has an interesting idea but the story is all over the place and in the end it just makes no sense. It seems that Wood was wanting to do the story about a psycho turned on by porn and then mix in a detective tale and the two items just didn't mix very well. The film is certainly a tad bit sleazier than the normal 1960 production but this doesn't make up for the weak dialogue or bad performances. It's funny but the film really puts down those who take advantage of girls who come to Hollywood to become stars and the film also preaches that girls should just stay home. The first female victim has such a Southern accent that I'm guessing Wood found her as she stepped off the bus. Wood's regular outlaws (Duncan, Moore, Conrad Brooks) are all here and it's worth noting that this here was Duncan's last feature film. Fans of Wood's work will still want to check this out but it's certainly miles behind his classics.

Yeah, it was. I'm sure I mention it all the time when talking about Halloween but I love that there's no motive for what The Shape does either. He kills people because he's a dangerous maniac and the sister-killing motive isn't invented until the sequel.
Yeah, he really wasn't even known as THE "Michael Myers" as we know him now. I really haven't put too much thought into it other than watching it last night but it just seems like poor Laurie should have made her dad take the keys and he might have been the one stalked!

***The Bermuda Triangle
Hugo Stiglitz stars as a captain of a ship in this 1978 mish mash of a film. I'm not sure what is going on, but a young girl among a vessel finds a doll floating in the water from a gallion a few centuries earlier. Strange things happen aboard the modern day ship. Birds attack, ship falters, people die, and strange lights and fog. And sharks. Lots of sharks!
Grade-D
***Barracuda
Just another Jaws inspired movie from 77'. A rather clever idea of why the Barracuda attack, and kill people in the water makes it stand out, but man is the acting wooden, and stiff.
Grade-B-
***Island Fury
Whoa, this one is all over the map. A couple ladies are kidnapped by treasure hunters because she has a rare coing around her neck.
Enter the backstory-The orgin of how she got it as a young girl take center stage for the next 60 minutes. Turns out she was on an Island with older sister and friends. But the island is host to a backwoods family that likes to torture and kill people like in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
Except for the young grandson....he has a good heart.
Grade-C
Well,
That does it.
The best time I have had since I started playing the Scary Movie challenge in 2008.
I'll add my total up in a few hours. PEACE!

I'm finished!
Those of you that finish, reply with your grand point total.
Remember if you watched TV shows 3 30mins shows equal a point.
So if you have 1 or 2 30mins shows left over just make it a .1 or .2
I'll put your grand point total next to your name link on the first page.
This is what I watched today on Halloween

Four Movies
Three movies that were first time viewings
The Last Man on Earth (1964) based on the novel I am Legend.
I knew nothing about this film, so it was a surprise when I saw in the opening credits that it was based on the novel.
I hated I am Legend.
I really liked this film. The black and white with the zombie like creatures and the moaning and calling out of his name were very Erie.
Also liked Vincent's day to day activities.
Even the flashbacks were better than I am Legend's
The Ghoul (1933) Boris Karloff stars as an Egyptologist that returns from the dead to take revenge on this that have violated his tomb.
This was another one of those classic horror movies that just wasn't scary in any way and really bored me to death.
Macabre (1958) A doctors daughter is buried alive and is given five hours to rescue her.
William Castle movie that uses a gimmick of "you can die of shock" from watching this movie
You were forewarned and told to watch the person sitting next to you before the film starts.
This was a film that I really enjoyed and for the most part enjoyed the twist ending.
I'm not allowed to say the twist ending.
The movie warned me not to say anything after it was over.
I'd be curious to see what they could do with this as a remake as I think it has lots of potential.
It does have one shock moment, which it is a little creepy.
Another creepy moment was seeing Jim Backus being sexy...eeewwww.
The movie also has an entertaining end credit sequence involving a animated funeral persuasion of who died in the movie.
Movie I watched on bluray.
Seen it many times.
Scream 2 (1997) A satisfying sequel. I'm one of the ones that doesn't mind the reveal of who the killer is.
My favorite moment is when
Gale Weathers is one one side of the two way glass seeing Duey being murdered
Here is my end stats
Number of films seen: 57
Number of films seen for the first time: 50
Number of TV episodes: 21
Point total 65
I'm going to go back and write down titles that people watched and liked so I can prepare myself for next years challenge.

The Last Man on Earth (1964) based on the novel I am Legend.
I knew nothing about this film, so it was a surprise when I saw in the opening credits that it was based on the novel.
I hated I am Legend.....
I quite like I am Legend. I think it's the theatrical that's the best, can't remember. The "boy & his dog" elements really worked for me. I think it did seem to be overly complicated at times, but Will Smith turns in the best performance I've ever seen him do.
Now, LMoE is one of my all time favs. I love that damn film. I think the MGM widescreen release is the best I own. The one paired with the pretty good Panic in the Year Zero with Ray Milland. Excellent double feature.

48 Dominion: Sequel to the Exorcist (2005) :star::star::star::half:
Though I liked this version better than Beginning both had their problems. Harlin's film was the flashier of the two while this one was more thoughtful, and comtemplative on the existence and nature of evil both in man and the supernatural. Stellan Skarsgard was excellent as a young Father Merrin as were the rest of the cast. The special effects could have been better but it's the story that matters.
49 Butterfly Effect (2004) :star::star::star::star:
A convoluted but well done film about a young man's journey backwards and fowards through time in the hope of changing not only his destiny but also his loved ones.
I remember how surprised I was at how effective Ashton Kutcher was in his role. Good movie.
50 The Exorcist (1973) :star::star::star::star::star:
Not too much to say about this one that I haven't said a dozen times. I finished last challenge with this movie and it's fitting that I finish with it again.

Great idea. Here's mine.
Favorite New watches: Dagon, Tucker & Dale Vs Evil, Halloween II (Rob zombie), Manson 1973 doc, I Saw the Devil
Overall fav movie: Dagon. I was half asleep while watching but still riveted, trying to keep my eyes open. Tucker & Dale close second, strained throat and headache caused by more laughter than I've outputted in years. Really needed both of these during this whole thing.
Favorite revisit (after many years) movies: Nightmares (mainly the video arcade story), Terror in the Aisles. TAG, JC's The Thing, various MST3K episodes, ..been many years for most.
Overall fav TV: Various Munsters episodes. Just a joy to revisit. Also, It's the Great Pumpkin and Fat Albert. Warm, good times. Penn & Tellers Invisible Thread.
Worse movies: Salo. Black Christmas remake. Disliked both of these.
Grossest movies: Salo, Chillerama.

Did this month fly by for some of you? It sure did for me. I can't believe we're in November already.
October 31:
Films:
Burnt Offerings (1976)
This film was a pleasant surprise when I first saw it many years ago.
Television episodes:
Wizards Of Waverly Place ("Halloween") (2009)
I thought I had seen this episode during one of the Halloween Challenges, but I had not. My children love this series.

JohnS,
Some of the television series in my list were a bit tricky for me trying to distinguish anthology television series from episodic television series. If there are any discrepancies, you may just reduce my grand total by whatever number you feel is necessary. And thank you again for running this wonderful Halloween Challenge. :)
Ockeghem's totals:
Films (3 new):
54
Television episodes (10 new):
48

35. Lovely Molly (FTV)
Ending the month on a strong note! Lovely Molly is the story of a newlywed couple who move into the bride's deceased parents' home. It isn't long before the wife starts hearing weird noises in the middle of the night somewhere in the house. Ultimately she must confront her troubled past, or will history be doomed to repeat itself? I'm a sucker for these "weird noise in the house in the middle of the night" movies. This one employs a good mix of handheld camcorders recording "live" (although their use is never really explained), as well as traditional movie camera shots. The effect is to make things more realistic feeling and creepy, as we're never sure what's going to pop into the frame--we're just certain something is! Kudos for this film for relying on atmospheric dread rather than cheesy jump scares or overdone visuals. This movie also is a great illustration of the concept of marital fears and the notion that "the stranger is among us". Great movie!

Really great job on the challenge this year, I think it was the best one yet!

I got in one last film last night. Not a scary one, but a fitting one to end the challenge.

084 10-31 Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948) One of the few horror comedies that manages to be funny without flat out mocking the monsters. A lovely cap to the Universal Monster craze, and a damn fine Abbott and Costello film to boot. 4/5

So my total is 86. 84 Movies, 55 fist time viewings, and 4 TV Shows, all one hour long first time viewings. I think they are 2 episodes equal 1 point for things like the Walking dead.

Now to start stock piling more films for next year! :P
