Dracula: The Series: Volume 1
For centuries he has ruled the night, inspiring dozens of plays, scores of movies and millions of nightmares. His enduring legend is known and feared everywhere. Now, Dracula seeks global domination as Alexander Lucard, international billionaire power broker, who is relentlessly building a hi-tech network of white-collar vampires. Two young American brothers know his secret (and his weaknesses!) as they join their uncle – a lifelong vampire chaser – to follow the trail across Europe and the U.S. in a desperate race to expose Lucard and his undead army of corporate vampires. The hunters become the prey as Lucard seeks to eliminate their threat to his eternal conquest.

The Boffin
While Sophie and Chris skirt around the relationship issue between them and finally end up on a date together, Max meets a clumsy, but brilliant, scientist who has made it his life's work to invent items for battling the undead.

My Thoughts:
This one is a very silly... but fun episode. The silliness comes from the bumbling scientist. I wish they would have done the ray gun better. It looked cool enough... but I didn't like the effects of how it looked when you shoot it. But over-all an entertaining episode... though I definitely seen better.

My Rating: 3.5/5

If you like slasher movies, disco music and Jamie Lee Curtis then this is your movie. Despite its very obvious flaws, I have memories of watching this movie as a little kid so it'll have a place in my heart.

Grade: D-

Generic slasher film filled with the usual stereotypes and a plot that must have been improvised on the set as I cannot believe a person would actually take credit for writing something so nonsensical. A year after an unfortunate Halloween misunderstanding results in an accidental murder, a brother-sister duo find themselves at a rural farm for a Halloween party. There's the hot girls, the stoner dudes, the hot-headed jock and his dumbass sidekicks, and a creepy old man who skulks around spouting nonsense about evil and pumpkins. Naturally, the kids begin to be picked off by a mysterious killer. The ending is so convoluted that it's never really explained who is doing the killing. I think it was:

The brother, Jonathan, somehow possessed by the evil spirit of his sister's former boyfriend whom Jonathan had murdered the prior Halloween.

But even that makes little sense and by the end of this mess, you really just don't care. Just be happy it's over.

THRILLER - "Well of Doom"

A man and his wife move into a house after his brother's mysterious death (he meets his doom in an exciting pre-credits sequence) and try to unravel the clues as to what happened. Despite that it's rather talky and we don't see much of the title creature until late in the movie, this Hammer Horror held my interest throughout as I was curious as to the details of what spurned these events. Michael Ripper added an extra boost in a sympathetic heroic role, and I also love the makeup on the monster.

3. The Howling
This could almost count as a first-time viewing since I haven't seen this since I rented a blurry VHS copy back in the mid-80's. Joe Dante directs his take on the werewolf genre with mostly good results. Although released in 1981, there is a very 70's sensibility with the grit and grime of New York City's porn district, and the idea of a cult that lives out in the sticks. The special effects are great, so much better than CGI, although we never believe for a moment that they could be real. The movie is more spectacle than scary, but it never winks at the audience the way "An American Werewolf in London" does. A little bit of humor might have put this one in the same league but it gets played straight, making it a near-miss.

One of Hammer Film's stylish thrillers to follow in the wake of Psycho is a heavily plotted tale about thought-dead heir who turns up three weeks before inherting a fortune. Is he the real deal or an impostor? And who is playing the organ at night? And who is that figure dressed as an altar boy? The busy plot makes for a fast-paced 80 minutes. And there's Oliver Reed playing the role of a borish drunkard, so extra points for that.

There's a bloody murder, a cover-up, and a killer who may kill again. Structured as a 'who-done-it?', but don't bother trying to figure out the killer's identity as it features one of those no-way-you-can-guess motives. Has some power in the final moments but it's too little too late. Frankie Avalon is in the cast to give this British production from Tigon some American appeal.

4. The Burrowers. (2008) ***debut viewing*** …and the Western-thon is in full swing! Really, this is more western than I was expecting. Not bad, really good acting and effects. Turns out these cowpokes are being pursued by something other than the red man, Kemosabe. Like a word written on an X-Files report, the “Burrowers” are getting hungry and the ground is rumbling. After a loooong trail ride you get a satisfying conclusion. But this one sure left me all tuckered out, and maybe for the wrong reasons. I napped for 90 minutes after. Aw, shucks! I’ll be Burrower feed for sure! Luckily, the nap was just the ticket to getting me back in the saddle again! Definitely better than the similar Dead Birds.

Hair raising level: 3/8ths of an inch. (for that nice ending)

5. Horror of Dracula. (1958) Might as well wake up with a teethy grin and throw on a Hammer classic. This is often called the best Dracula movie ever. It’s a Hammer classic without a doubt. I have to admit, I’m looking more forward to some other teethy Hammers that I have on hand and haven’t seen in many an age. That good time Hammer Horror feeling ages so well, but it may be best to let em sit in a dark place for a little longer between bites. I’ll let this lay for a few years before spinning again.

Hair raising level: 1/4th of an inch.

6. The Hills Have Eyes. (2006) Second viewing since probably ’07 when I rented. Cheap enough to buy this year for a second try. I’m sure I’d seen way too many like this at the time and felt the second viewing would be more successful. It was WAY more successful! The original was relentlessly disturbing, heart-breakingly depressing and just overall a nasty experience…with Dee Wallace. This updating gets the concept right with a good cast and some top notch visual effects. “Beast” may be my favorite character. I cheered him more than once. And for some reason the ending left me watery. :*) Anybody else…? Or am I too much of a sissy? I wasn’t sure what that was all about…I guess I just really got into it this time.

Hair-raising level: Like sticking the fork in the toaster! ||||||||

7. Time After Time. (1979) Here I go to justify a viewing of this 70s classic. It won’t be that hard to do since I could PROBABLY justify Oliver! The musical. Well…Oliver! Was pretty damn dark, and Oliver Reed’s character was my kind of potential child murderer! Here we have H.G. Wells chasing his old friend Jack the Ripper through time. Malcolm McDowell and David Warner are one hell of a team here. There are scenes here that scared the crap out of me as a kid. It’s still kind of suspenseful. But really, this helps me capture the nostalgic side of this marathon with very little effort. I had a great time with it this year and was sad when it was over. I still have a crush on Mary Steenburgen. Not the best actress in the world but she’s a sweet girl in this role. I love her character.

Hair raising Level: 1/4th of an inch. Not the scariest, has moments….

8. When a Stranger Calls. (2006) ***debut viewing*** Good time to take a chance with a low rated remake, $3 Big Lots DVD purchase. Seriously, I don’t know what the haters expected. But this was good. The actress in the main role was obviously chosen for her good looks over her acting ability, but that’s the only weakness for me personally. I’d read from some critics that the story was too flimsy to justify the running time. Not for me! This felt a great deal like a throw back. Sure, we all know the story from the, I say, vastly inferior original version with Carol kane, but this updating keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not declaring this should win some kind of Alfred Hitchcock Award or anything. I’m only saying it’s better than it’s rep by a long shot. Unless you need every scene to be something concrete and bloody and splattering all over the movie set. Instead, this is what The Strangers maybe should have been. I’m hoping for more gems like this.

Hair raising level: ½ an inch upwards! It’s no Black Christmas (haven’t seen that remake, but original is similar to this)…

9. Signs. (2002) Call me one of this ones worst critics. Softened on some things…. M’s acting in his own movie really isn’t bad. Gibson is really good…plus Phoenix and especially the young actors playing the kids are all good. But I’ve always felt that way. The whole pacing of the film is slower than needed and the cheesy idea of these stupid, slow moving aliens taking over is hard to accept in the way it’s presented here. Where’s the firearms?!! Seriously, in this country looking town everybody would be armed to the teeth with weapons you thought were illegal. I still don’t like the whole “reason for everything” story line either…where everything works out with everything else. Still, the positives make it a good viewing every now and then. But I’ll never “just love” this one. All kinds of missed opportunity and stupid ideas mixed in.

Hair raising level: 3/8ths an inch. There’s some good moments towards the end until it falls apart.

10. The Lost Boys. (1987) This becomes one of the top experiences this year for me. We saw this on cable originally and I bought the VHS years ago. Of course, I’ve all but abandoned tapes and just kept on planning to pick up the DVD year after year…then they put out a better DVD set and I planned on that one year after year also. Now I can say, goody goody! I got the Bluray and it’s spectacular! The sound is just wonderful…everything is pretty sharp looking. Aged? Yeah, all kinds of things have in this one. But it doesn’t matter. It’s so damn good to see on my big tv and sound system looking all shiny and new. That song “thou shall not kill” is truly amazing through a good sound system. Have to say it’s a real shame that kid isn’t with us anymore. Drugs suck worse than vamps any day. He had a lot of appeal as a young actor…like a friend down the street or something. I used to be jealous of everybody on the motorbikes in this, since I’d sold mine a few years before this came out. But this year, like this movie on a disc, I finally bought one a couple of months ago (see photo) …of course I’m movie watching instead of off riding it in this great weather we’re having. That hurts like a fang in the throat! So I’m still jealous, only of vamps that are off riding and sucking blood instead of home watching a bunch of movies!!!

Hair raising level: ½ inch of 80s hair do.

Almost an epic comedy. Repeat: Epic comedy. I’ve spend way too much time over the years trashing this film that was obviously made with a lot of effort and the aim to be a serious piece of work. It looks the business but the sweeping camera movements, cheesy acting, just EVERYTHING over the top…it “kills me” every time. I’m in the floor at every scene and feel like a junior Joel/Mike & the Bots. As the weekend was coming to a close, I kind of softened, stopped poking fun and really did enjoy it more than normal in a straight sort of way. Im always happy when it’s finally over though. Still waiting for a really good serious Frankenstein film to stand beside the original and it’s sequel. Nothing ever will.

Hair raising level: Helena Bonham Carter as “the bride”, burned up, spotty and flat. But it’s still a fun time in whatever way you want to take it.

Plot:
1959. Friday nights. We time-traveled. Witnessed surprising twists. Entertained aliens. Experienced fear. And first journeyed to The Twilight Zone of Rod Serling's memorable TV series. And guided by four imaginative moviemakers, we traveled there again in 1983. Directors John Landis, Steven Spielberg, Joe Dante, and George Miller fashion stories based on or inspired by classic episodes. Landis weaves the tale of a bigot who gets a walloping dose of his own hatred. Spielberg takes over with a fable of senior citizens offered a magical rejuvenation. Dante serves up a terror trip with a child who uses his cartoon-inspired powers to enslave his family. Then fright goes aloft with Miller's finale about a neurotic passenger who sees a monster on the jetliner's wing. Or does he?

My Thoughts:
This is one of my old favorites. One of the first anthology horrors I ever seen. I always loved how this movie started. The prologue is a lot of fun. But I never cared much for the actual first segment of the movie. The one with the bigot finding out what it is like to be like the people he hates so much. It is a good idea for a story... and I wouldn't go so far to say it is a bad segment. It just seemed to not keep my attention as well as the rest of the movie.

The second story is more of a fun story. Where with the help of a new resident the people in the retirement home become young again while playing outside one night. And they need to decide if they want to stay young or be old once again. Not the greatest story either... but I enjoyed it more then the first one.

In the third segment I enjoyed quite a bit. We meet a boy that can do anything he can imagine. Of course this is from a famous episode of the series. I am still not that familiar with the series and think that all the segments are from episodes of the series. But I must admit I like the way the episode was done more then the segment in this movie. As the movie made it too cartoon-ish.

The final segment is my favorite one in the movie. A man afraid of flying is up in a plane where he sees a gremlin out on the wing tearing up the plane. It is this segment that really made this movie for me. It pushes the movie to the next rating level for me personally.

Wow! what a way to kick this thing off(got a late start). This may be the best slasher film I will ever see, and the score is phenomenal.

Having watched it again over the summer, I like that movie too. The first 10 or 15 minutes of the original are great and none of the remake comes close to it but taking each movie as a whole, the remake is much better. I always find some maniac making phone calls to be creepy because that seems like something that could happen rather than the more fantastic Universal monster movies or A Nightmare On Elm Street or The Exorcist.

10. Friday The 13th (1980)

The king of slasher movies. This movie has the chills that nearly all of the F13 sequels lack and it has some excellent Tom Savini special effects.

11. Friday The 13th Part 2

I've always liked the sequel. There's a likable heroine and Jason's potato sack is pretty cool. And like the first one, I enjoy looking at the woods and being able to tell that it's the east coast.

I'm watching this classic right now. I love the film. Those are some fancy butterfly windows that guy has on his car. And, I never, ever tire of hearing the Dies irae -- no matter what the instrumentation.

Horror takes a detour deep into the woods in this terrifying cross between Scream and Tales From The Crypt, starring Christine Taylor (Dodgeball) and Ron Livingston (Office Space).

Returning home from a concert and driving recklessly, four teenagers crash their car on a deserted road. To ward off the cold, they build a fire and wait for help. But the hair-raising stories they tell around the fire put a deeper chill into the night. Each tale is more lurid, more horrifying, more shocking than anything they've heard before. Yet for these unlucky teens in the woods, the biggest shock is still to come...

My Thoughts:
This is an Anthology Horror that I discovered in just the last couple years. And it quickly became my favorite Anthology movie I ever seen. There is a very short opening story Which admittedly is not that great. It is like most the stories in this movie... based off a well known urban legend.

Next we get to the wraparound story... which I love. Best one I ever seen on any of this type of movie. the wraparound story is well done and has great atmosphere of it's own.

Then we finally get to the first of the 3 actual stories. Which is a pretty good one. There is a newlywed couple that are driving around in a camper... and they get lost and stranded in the back streets somewhere. Has likable characters and pretty good atmosphere. I liked how they handled the things in the dark... as you never get a good look at them. Though it was on the predictable side as it is based of a well known urban legend.

The second story has a young girl with an intruder in the house. Also off a well known urban legend so you know what to expect. I know what you are thinking... why watch something that you know how the stories are going to end. And I would normally agree with you... but these are done so well you don't mind the fact that you know where the stories are going... you just enjoy the journey of getting there.

The last story is my favorite of them all. A guy on a motorcycle (Glenn Quinn of Roseanne fame) stumbles onto a house where a beautiful mute girl lives... and it seems she lives in a haunted house. This is the one of the 3 stories that I do not recognize from an urban legend.

From here we find out the end of the wraparound story... which is also done well.
this is a great movie over-all even if it is predictable. Definitely one I would recommend to any horror fan.

12. Friday The 13th Part 3

My least favorite of the first 4 Friday The 13th movies. Jason gets his hockey mask and he does it in 3-D. The worst part is the recycled elements like the exact duplicate murders from the first one and the re-use of the score from the first one.

Damn. I wasn't the biggest fan of the first Hatchet but I was hoping that the sequel did well enough to expand to the AMC in my area, if only so I could support an unrated movie. The closest theater to me playing it was about 50 miles away.

Northern California, 1949: In the woods outside of a small town, a hideous witch lured children to her crumbling home where she stole their teeth, butchered their bodies, and cursed their souls to wander the earth forever. Decades later the house has been converted into a quaint country inn, but an untold evil remains: The witch's slumber has been disturbed, and her vengeful spirit seeks the violent slaughter of all who stay there. And for one eleven-year-old girl with a loose molar and an active imagination, the ultimate horror begins with a visit from THE TOOTH FAIRY.

Chandra West (WHITE NOISE), Lochlyn Munro (FREDDY VS. JASON) and P.J. Soles (HALLOWEEN, THE DEVIL’S REJECTS) star in this grisly shocker written by Stephen J. Cannell that rips open the dark side of a not-so-innocent childhood legend.

My Thoughts:
Not a bad story... but I definitely seen better. It is definitely worth watching... but at the same time it is not one I would spend too much money on. One thing I liked about this one is that it was more then just a movie about a witch... it was also a movie about ghosts... ghosts that needed help to get rid of the witch so their souls could finally find peace. For those that don't like gore... be warned that this one has a few scenes of gore in it. So over-all I would say this is a solid above average movie.

My Rating: 3.5/5

A trucker (Ryan Reynolds) working in Iraq delivering kitchen supplies is kidnapped and buried alive. The ransom is "5 million money" and he has only a lighter and cell phone. The film takes place entirely within the confines of the pine box and never lets up on the tension. Reynolds gives a tour de force performance in the film, with the voice actors doing stellar work too. Utterly convincing and horrifying.

Five people gathered in an elevator find themselves trapped and being brutally murdered one by one. But the killer may be the devil himself. This is basically a retelling of Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None with a supernatural bend. Not too many surprises (I even guessed the villain's identity correctly) but fast-paced and fun. Trying to make the film have some ultimate message about the power of forgiveness comes off as rather phony though.

Faithful remake of Let the Right One In concerns 12 year old boy who takes a liking to his new, mysterious neighbor, even though she tells him they cann't be friends and that she's not a girl. Interesting take on the vampire story has performances atmosphere. But the bully subplot plays out in an obvious fashion. Best original idea in the remake is the use of the '80s candy "Now and Laters."

Based on a true occurence, a nursing assistant runs into a homeless man, who gets stuck in her windshield. But instead of trying to get help she just drives him to her garage and lets him remained trapped. Shocking, funny, and brutal, this is one of director Stuart Gordon's best post-Reanimator films. Members of biker gang The Devil's Advocates run afoul a satanic cult. The cult leader then curses them turning certain members into werewolves. Great title for a very dated movie. The werewolf scenes are handled perfectly fine. But there's too much padding (even at 79 minutes) of the bikers roaming about, and of one of the members warning them they're all doomed. Could have been campy fun.

Vacationing couples witness a satanic ceremony where a girl is murdered. They then have to flee the satanists in this entertaining hybrid of horror and action films. Peter Fonda and Warren Oates make great leads, and the smash-ups are staged with aplomb. The ending is typical '70s gloom and doom. A blast!
