Ben-Hur, but I don't think that either will last long against the competition.
Brook: You trying to sic the abstainees on me?
Considering that Nights is a Criterion and Aguirre is pretty well known, I think that most will have seen both. True, Woman of the Dunes is reasonably obscure today, but it was very well known when released. Plus, its good to have another Japanese score.

Ben-Hur (Miklos Rozsa) moves on with a decisive 6-0 victory. Shame to see Bax's wonderfully witty score to Oliver Twist (an outstanding example of the British film music idiom) fall so early and without vote. But being expected to win against Ben-Hur was perhaps an impossible task.
On to bracket 3...

ROUND 1; Bracket 3:

The Magnificent Seven (Elmer Bernstein)

Where Eagles Dare (Ron Goodwin)

2 abstains in a row, haven't either of these films.

I'll 2nd The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, another great Bernard Hermann score.

Thanks for the support SteveGon. I know Woman in the Dunes is a long shot of getting in, but I just saw it over the weekend and the score is absolutely haunting, perfect for making the films visuals even more unsettling.

All 3 are available on DVD, and at least Aguirre is also on CD.

Brook, how's the Woman in the Dunes DVD? I've been thinking about picking it up. Also, if you like Popol Vuh's Aguirre soundtrack, I'll recommend the Heart of Glass and Nosferatu scores as well. I purchased all three as a set - they came in a faux film can. I'm not sure if it's still available, though.

Bernstein's score is among the few undeniable virtues of this highly disappointing (for me, anyway) film.

I've got almost all the Herzog DVD's, so I'm familiar with Heart of Glass and Nosferatu, that CD set shows up on Ebay sometimes, I've considered it.

The Woman in the Dunes DVD is pretty good. I don't think it will make anyone think Criterion, but there's no real obvious print damage and the transfer is sound. It's hard to evaluate because it's such a dark film, the blacks are ok, but I don't really have a basis for knowing how dark it's supposed to be. The only extra is an unsubtitled Japansese trailer.

I imagine I'll pick it up eventually.

Could somebody second Cape Fear already! This score definitely deserves to be in this tournament!

Might as well call it a little early. The Magnificent Seven (Elmer Bernstein) continues the trend of easy victories, 7-0.

ROUND 1; Bracket 4:

The Godfather (Nino Rota)
vs.
Red River (Dimitri Tiomkin)
