This may have been answered before, but a search didn't seem to yield any results, so . . .

The last line of dialogue in the movie Shane is 'Bye Shane" as uttered by Joey as Shane rides into the mountains. The DVD release omits this entirely. Has there ever been an explanation as to what happened, or was it ever corrected in a subsequent pressing?

This is interesting. I will have to check my copy tonight.

So what are we relying on for confirmation that the missing line was ever there--memories from 1953?

I raised this issue due to some feedback I received on a review of Shane that I did for DVD Verdict. The person who provided the feedback compared the DVD to his VHS copy and said that the latter had the words "Bye Shane" echoing softly as Shane road into the hills. Unfortunately I no longer have a VHS copy to compare the DVD with. I'm just trying to get the matter straightened out, as this is an issue that more than one person has mentioned. If as Martin Blythe says that nothing is missing from the DVD, why is the VHS version different?

Sorry to disagree with Martin, but the words "Bye, Shane" were definitely spoken in the last shot with Shane riding up the mountain with his left arm slightly extended out due to him being shot. I verified the line of dialogue spoken by comparing the VHS tape against the dvd release.

Will we get a definitive answer on why the VHS and the DVD are different?

In my opinion, Martin Blythe's response was unhelpfully curt and dismissive. At the very least, it raises even more questions, such as:

If the DVD isn't missing anything, then why does the VHS have something additional?

Maybe the DVD release ran into clearance issues which didn't allow them to the last line of the film?
Or...This 'edit' could be a MPAA approved edition.
Bottom line...no reason for it. (It also goes to show how little is known about their own product.)[IMG]

Shane is listed as a pre-order on Amazon for May 13. Anyone know if this is a 50th anniversary SE, or are they just re-releasing the same disc?

I think that's just the date the price drop (from $24.99 to $19.99 MSRP) takes effect. The release itself won't change.

Bumping this thread up since I was thinking about purchasing this myself. Was this matter ever resolved? I would like to know before I buy this disc.

Oh, my god, I have owned the Shane disc for a couple of years and I thought I was going crazy for thinking that the movie ended with "Bye Shane...." Now someone has confirmed for me and I am officially not nuts! Now I, too, am curious for an explanation....

Just saw this on AMC, and there was no "Bye Shane" at the end. A little help from Mr. Blythe would be nice.

Will we ever hear anything definitive about this?

My somewhat monthly posting, asking if anyone has any definite info regarding the missing "Bye Shane" at the end of the movie. I'm hoping that by bumping this up, someone with authority (Martin?) will speak about this inconsistency.
