Funnily enough I was only watching "Girl Crazy" (one of my favourites) a few nights ago. One of the last of the Titans. A true showbiz veteran. His work will endure.

That guy had more charisma in his little finger...

    A giant of a performer.

"Hey! Let's put on a show!"

Cary Grant once said he was the most talented performer in showbusiness. His Private Screenings episode was quite moving...

Well, that's it -- Hollywood is gone now.

I had the great good fortune of seeing his one man show (with his wife Jan) a few years ago, something I'll never forget.

I'm ashamed to say that it was only in the last 5 minutes that I actually bought the entire Andy Hardy collection on dvd.

Also Mickey was one of the last performers from the silent era to leave us -- also, Mickey Mouse was named after him (according to Mickey)

We still have a few of the greats amongst us - Doris Day (who just celebrated her 90th birthday) and Olivia de Havilland, off the top of my head.

And you wouldn't normally think "Mickey Rooney" and "Shakespeare" in the same sentence, but his wild Puck set the bar in the '35 "Midsummer Night's Dream":

What a talented man! He could sing, dance, play several instruments, act in comedies, dramas, melodramas, noirs, gangster films...and Puck.
As far as other stars still with us, from the silent era I can think of Baby Peggy; and from the sound era, Luise Rainer (104 years old); and Lupita Tovar (still only 103), mother of Susan Kohner, and grandmother of the Weitz brothers. She is well remembered from starring in the Spanish Dracula (1931).
Back to Mickey Rooney, who gave so much pleasure to us...RIP.

Oh how could I have forgotten Luise Rainer - the oldest-living Oscar winner in current history!

Certainly one of the greatest talents ever. So many great moments in cinema but it was the Andy Hardy series that really won me over.

In a strange thing, I went to a Billy Joel concert with my mom and stepfather tonight and while walking back to the car my mom commented that Joel was starting to look like Rooney in the face. I drive home (90-minutes) and this news breaks.

You forgot Jane Withers who started with a Shirley film and went on to her own slew of films at 20th Century-Fox and was in Giant.

I'm not admitting anything, but sometimes when you hear of the death of an icon, you think "I didn't know (s)he was still alive".

Mickey Rooney was a giant indeed. I've known his name since I was very young, one of the actors my mother told me about (citing specific scenes). Seeing him myself later.

The world around us is fading away.

RIP, Mickey Rooney. Thanks a lot.

Sad to say , many people from Mad World are no longer around! By the way, I've read on the german ARD that Rooneys original name was Joe Yule Jr where he was born in New York 1920.

RIP to an incredible talent that was larger than life. A greatly underrated dramatic performer as well. Unfortunately there weren't a lot of quality adult roles for someone his size.

Despite his age, this surprised me as Mickey has been getting out and about fairly regularly as evidenced by the facebook page that his son runs. There's a nice picture from last week of Mick with Dick Van Patten and Mel Brooks enjoying a day at the races. He also made an appearance in the audience during Jay Leno's last week.
