I'm watching tonight - with a mint julep.
Probably my favourite Bond film, the many iconic scenes just mesmerise me every time.

I have all the Bond films (except the comedy Casino Royale) through Die Another Day. I lost interest with the "reboot" which turned Bond into Bourne and sucked all the fun out of them. My son gifted me with Skyfall, which didn't change my mind at all. It was a good action flick, but not a Bond movie. Daniel Craig's take on Bond makes Roger Moore look like Timothy Dalton at his most serious. Man, talk about dour!

The only fun in Skyfall happened when the DB5 appeared, and the film makers blew it up to make sure we got the message. Fun is now illegal in Bond World.

Which is why I've moved out.

P.S. I like the Bourne flicks (at least the first three). The original is always better.

Interesting that one of the goldfinger articles mentions that thunderball was a bigger blockbuster than goldfinger. Was you only live twice a huge film as well? It would've been fun to have been there for the older bond films and their releases. I'm excited that bond 24 will get rolling in a few months. I'm thinking it will feel more traditional this time. We have the old m's office and moneypenny back at long last. Here's wishing and hoping anyway.I did like the last 2 Craig ones but they are so different than the brosnan and 62-89.

The hysteria surrounding the release of the Bond movies in the mid-60s is something akin to what the Beatles generated in their appearances. I'm not kidding. Folks sat through them two or three times in one sitting (you could do it back in those days of continuous runs), and UA continually kept Bond films in double feature circulation between each film release. Whereas most hit films played two, three, or four weeks at local theaters, the Bonds would play a couple of months. And those soundtrack albums were big hits and the title songs to Goldfinger and Thunderball in particular were on the radio all the time. And then there were the tie-ins with toys and clothes and cologne (my brother had 007 cologne). Bond was really everywhere.

Thunderball was the biggest box office success the series had until Skyfall. (Box offices numbers adjusted for inflation, of course.)

Beautifully stated. I treasure my memories of every bit of that.

I love the john cork making of documentaries on the Blu-ray Discs. I wish he could do another round of extras for the films too!

When the theater depicted in my avatar advertised that they would run GOLDFINGER all through the night on New Year's Eve 1964/65, my 15-year-old self knew right away that's how he wanted to spend the evening. (I had already thrilled to it a week or two before -- it had just opened in December, I believe). My folks dropped me off and I sat through three consecutive showings that night. I was in heaven.

Definitely one of the high points for the set . It's a shame they're getting old now with Thunderball / Goldfinger ones now 20 years since they were done for the Laserdiscs. They're still great viewing but I was disappointed that the individual releases had the documentaries upgraded with the photos and film footage in HD but all the titles that were new in the Bond 50 set were just the old versions all in SD. The upgrade did make a nice difference

Between the back-to-back phenomenons of Goldfinger and Thunderball, you have to realize that the world went spy crazy. There was The Man from U.N.C.L.E., I Spy, Get Smart on TV and all those other Bond-like movies like Flint and Helm and the like. By the time You Only Live Twice came out, while it was still hugely popular, the frenzy had cooled. The world was changing.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But we did get too much of a good thing. Still, what I wouldn't give to have those wonderful sixties moments to relive.

I've been come a big fan of The Avengers, The Saint and The Persuaders thanks to Bond.

Can not wait to own all Bond films in HD, 4K would be sweet but HD would be nice. I have some titles in 480p SD-DVD but as soon as finances allow I will get all bond movies in HD.

I am curious to see if some of the Bond films will be issued on 4K blu ray next year when Bond 24 hits theaters.

Some new casting rumors on the Bond 24 villain:

I don't think those old 4K scans would stand up to scrutiny, brand new 4K scans would be a great starting point for this.

A 4K scan is a 4K scan. It's the processing done after the scan that makes all the difference. I mean really, the whole point of a 4K scan in the first place is for preservation. Once you have a 4K scan there should never be a need to do another one - you can always go back to that scan and start from scratch to make a new transfer.
