I just watched the film...WOW!!! This movie truly blew me away...I know I say that about some films...but this one really just....wow...everything was right...casting...cinematography...script...acting ...music...etc. And I will admit that I actually cried during the film...that says a lot...a truly powerful film that I feel ranks right up there with Black Hawk Down and Apocalypse Now...

Oh and the DVD is out of this world...the transfer and DD5.1 were simply stunning! Reference for sure...I loved the ambience in the sound mix...really envelops you...

To anyone waiting for the Superbit- don't bother. As LaMarcus said, this is the best a movie has looked on my 57" screen. I can't imagine how it could look any better.

Maybe a much larger screen would benefit from a Superbit transfer, but this is the best looking movie outside of animation I've yet seen.

And the movie itself- almost as good as the PQ. :emoji_thumbsup:

I also opt for the Superbit, but I rented this from Netflix.
I agree that picture looked great but I wouldn't call it "reference" but close.
I also like the sound alot,it was well recorded, the only problem to me was the sound of the choppers, they sounded tiny, the jets were killer though.A good movie too!

Just one thing I'm curious about. Does the title "Tears of the Sun" make any sense at all after you've seen the film or is it one of those "Well, it sure sounds cool" kinda titles? :)

I haven't seen the film yet, but the disc is currently on its way, hope I get it by the weekend. I only ordered it because a few years back I decided to buy every Bruce Willis movie sight unseen (believe me, 1994 was a tough year, thank God for Pulp Fiction :D ), but after reading this thread I'm getting really excited about the movie.

Cheers,
Chris

I watched the movie this evening. It's definitely one of the better movies this year. It didn't quite have the same emotional impact as BHD, but very well done overall.:emoji_thumbsup:

It's nice to see a movie that actually uses those boxes that sit on our back walls that many have paid several hundred dollars for!!!.:emoji_thumbsup:

definitley a great 5.1 mix. Plus during the scne where Willis's team go into stop the ethnic cleansing going on in a village look at the faces of the people they are escorting that are watching and listening to the gunfire from a distance..........they are'nt acting. Truly powerful.

I know, that tripped me out too. I didn't know Bruce Willis was that involved with things relating to humanity. I found a new respect for a actor that I already loved.

Great film, great dvd. I watched it last night after I recalibrated my HT to accomodate some new equipment.

They originally wanted to call it "Rules of Engagement" but I guess they really wanted to downplay the "run and gun" aspect of the film, instead they wanted the film title to reflect the horror and sadness in regards to the humanity issues and the incomprehensible tribalism.

Also, I can only speculate but Africa is often refered to as the "Land of the Sun" hence "Tears of the Sun".

After watching the movie, I saw the title in a different light: Substitute a homogram (I believe that's the correct term; i.e., "son") in the title and it sure seems to make sense to me.

Actually I think the original titles were "Hostile Rescue" and "Man of War." Pretty lame titles in my opinion.

Nah, it was Rules of Engagement, they said so in the special features, which I also recommend watching. Seeing the voices of africa segments were jaw droping.

Fox actually owned the rights to the title "Tears of the Sun". Willis wanted the name so badly that Fox offered to allow him to use the name if he would commit to a Die Hard 4 over the next 2 years or so. Willis agreed and was allowed to use "Tears of the Sun".

A few years ago they were tyring to rework the "Tears of the Sun" screenplay into Die Hard 4. This was around the same time they were going to cast Ben Affleck as John McClane's son-in-law.

Could someone confirm somethig for me. In the end of the movie,.after the helecopter touches down in Camaroon
is it me or do the colors become about 5x more vibrant? It seemed like an odd moment for that to be intentional. Just wondering.

BTW Im also waiting for the Superbit...I like DTS and the brushed alluminum box.

BTWII I thought it was funny that they used Nigeria as the backrop for the film. With all the bannana republics in Africa Nigeria actually is a democracy recovering from a military dictatorship.

I actually helped a nigerian co-worker put together a flier for one of last months presidential canidates (using Powerpoint and Photoshop). He sent the file to Nigeria and they used the flyer IN A FULL PAGE ADD ON ELECTION DAY IN NIGERIA'S LARGEST ENGLISH LANGUAGE DAILY PAPER! The guy won (and now I'm pissed that I didnt check the guys political philosophy before showing the guy powerpoint. Dammit!)
